groups with no user argument returns only the default group

So only when running kosnole from the plasma desktop does `groups` return only my default group. When I run `groups ${USER}` or `groups $(whoami)` I get the expected output which matches what is in my /etc/group file. If I run `groups` from outside of X, it runs fine.
