|

Hello,
I think I already managed to break my Gentoo system. So I just figured out that I can have multiple files in /etc/portage/package.use so I assume that I am supposed to organize the USE flags into different files. So I started organizing my USE flags and deleting the ones I didn't need...
... So... it looks like I deleted a USE flag that I needed. It's something I added while installing LXDE. I decided that I don't like LXDE and removed it, and I thought it would be reasonable to remove the flag too. But now I have this:
Code: |
# emerge --update --newuse --deep @world
Calculating dependencies... done!
WARNING: One or more updates/rebuilds have been skipped due to a dependency conflict:
sys-fs/udev:0
(sys-fs/udev-216:0/0::gentoo. ebuild scheduled for merge) conflicts with
>=sys-fs-udev-208-r1:0/0[abi_x86_64(-),gudev(-)] required by virtual/libgudev-215-r3:0/0::gentoo,installed)
|
So... it looks like I messed something up. But I don't know how to produce the correct entry inside packages.use. Can anyone help me?
Cheers,
Daniel. |

Whenever you have a problem with Portage, there is a good chance someone will ask you for the output of emerge --info and/or emerge --pretend --verbose affected-packages. In this case, that someone is me. You can improve your chances of getting a solution in the first response if you volunteer that output without waiting for someone to request it.
Please post the output of emerge --info ; emerge --pretend --verbose sys-fs/udev virtual/libgudev. |

Thanks for being patient. I'm new here. Here is the output:
Code: |
# emerge --pretend --verbose sys-fs/udev virtual/libgudev
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] sys-fs/udev-216::gentoo USE="acl firmware-loader gudev kmod -doc -introspection (-selinux) -static-libs" 0 KiB
[ebuild R ] virtual/libgudev-215-r3::gentoo USE="-introspection -static-libs -systemd" 0 KiB
Total: 2 packages (2 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 0 KiB
The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.use" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by virtual/libgudev-215-r3::gentoo[-systemd]
# required by virtual/libgudev (argument)
>=sys-fs/udev-216 gudev
|
The output of emerge --info is included below, but it looks like emerge is already suggesting a solution. Should I just copy the last three lines and put them in package.use/foo?
Here is the rest:
Code: |
# emerge --info

DanielC,
Putting Code: | # required by virtual/libgudev-215-r3::gentoo[-systemd]
# required by virtual/libgudev (argument)
>=sys-fs/udev-216 gudev | into package.use would work.
You can manage all your USE flags in package.use on a per package basis if you really want to but you will rebuild a lot of things that way.
Look at what else can USE=gudev and decide if it should go into package.use for a small number of packages or into make.conf, so it affects all packages.
My view is that if I mostly want a USE flag is that it belongs in make.conf, then, if there is a package or two where it annoys me, package.use can turn it off. _________________ Regards,

That makes sense. I moved it to make.conf. |

I go by the rule of thumb that if four or more packages want the flag, it goes into make.conf. Anything that really annoys me, like, policykit, gets turned off in make.conf and turned on in package.use when another package demands it.
It's a matter of taste. |
