I pinned xterm and firefox to the desktop and after a few days plasma shell 5.4 crashes on start. Sometimes restarting it helps, but now no joy. I fixed it by deleting .config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc. As far as I can see the difference between the newly generated file and the customized one is basically the task manager configuration:

The other diffeences I can see are some configuration dialog settings:
