I am running under a normal user in who is in the wheel group.

Before running system and world updates, I could

sudo /opt/vmware/bin/vmware and run vmware as a normal user.

after update this fails.

I can su - to root and run vmware directly.

from $ when i run w sudo. I am getting "Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key".

echo $DISPLAY gives me :0

xauth list produces a list as root.

tried copying .Xauthority to normal user folder and chowning it to the user but I get the invalid cookie still.

Looked at man page and tried several xauth commands to generate or list but nothing works.

xauth list as root produces a list of about 6-8 entries, some of which dont look current.

is there a way to regenerate a new .Xauthority completely as well.

Seem to have done it now. Now root gives me same error!

xauth list shows only one entry for localhost.

a reboot fixed the issue with root being able to start.

Issued a 'set' command and root and saw an XAUTHORITY entry. 'set' as user did not. did "export XAUTHORITY=/home/user/.Xauthority" as user and sudo worked.
