I am running Mozilla Thunderbird 38.2.0 on my amd64 system. The last few versions have performed terribly for me. It can take minutes for it to start up, and the whole programs stops, sometimes for minutes. I assume that this is related to checking for email, but I honestly don't know for sure.

I have tried deleting my email settings and regenerating them, but all that did was to delete everything in my inbox.

I need some advice on how to cure this, other than going back to kmail.

emerge --info follows:

Alternatively you could have created a new clean profile (be sure thunderbird not running, or it won't work):
Code:
$ thunderbird -ProfileManager

Will this affect all of my saved emails and contact list?

There was a portage message after Thunderbird upgrade about possible plugin trouble with solution. I'm not sure if your problem is plugin related, though.

I have 4 add-ons; Google Calendar Tab, 3.9 Lightning 4.0.2 and the Provider for Google Calendar 1.0.4. Enigmail is disabled. These set up automatically in the last iteration of Thunderbird.

No. You could switch between different profiles. Same as with firefox.
