I have a nVidia GeForce GTX 660 and use the nouveau driver. I tried to switch mplayer from XV to VDPAU and followed this guide https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/VDPAU#mplayer. Hence, my mplayer.conf looks like

First of all, it works! Mplayer tells that is uses VDPAU and CPU usage is considerably lower. But the quality is indefensibly worse. I have block artifacts and something I would call "ghost images". (If some area of the video turns black then I see still fragments from the scene before.) The problem are not specific to a particular video but exists for different codecs (wmv3, h.264) and different sources (MKV file, bluray). If I switch back to XV the problems disappear.
Any ideas?
