I'm about two weeks into my latest gentoo install (this one's a keeper). I've been proceeding slowly--reading much more than emerging--so I've only installed a few basics: gentoolkit, sudo, SSDcronTRIM, a few other things. Configuring as I go. I haven't even gotten to X yet (though I am there now).

I started with a basic stage3 (20150723) and 4.0.5 sources. Turned off a lot more than enabled with make menuconfig open in a chroot window and lscpci output in a host window (sysresccd). Booted nicely using EFI stub with no modules or initrd.

Now I've switched my profile to default hardened, rebuilt the toolchain, and recompiled @world, and am looking to see whether to build from hardened sources before or after installing x.

As I was checking my /usr/src/linux/.config file to see if I had shot myself in the foot WRT xorg (comparing to the wiki page kernel settings) I came across:

Enjoy your Gentoo.

If you wanted a hardened install from the outset, there is a hardened stage3. If you changed your mind along the way, you can convert too.

Thanks Neddy. I'm just trying to proceed slowly--had lots of issues by getting ahead of myself, I think. My current path is working so far. I anticipate complications to come.

Since you've answered this, I was curious about the state of the Olde Fashioned Gentooee pages. I've been reading some of the discussions regarding systemd and udev (I am openrc at the moment). This box I am working on is intended for a specific purpose and would probably be a good candidate for a static /dev, but I'd like to get the functionality I need squared away first, since static appears to be a special case in today's environment.

I'm trying to go a little at a time, as I lack a long personal experience base to draw on.

The Olde Fashioned Gentooee pages are written in Guide XML and are still where they always were, so they are not lost.
I need to move them to the Wiki, so I need to learn to write Wiki first.

I suppose if I change the file extension to txt, my devspace would serve the raw XML.

That would be OK with me. I've been reading tokenized text for a lot longer than I've been reading gentoo.

From what I've seen here in where the subject has come up, there would seem to be some interest in them. At the same time, it also seems that those that have the interest have it because they also have enough experience to not actually need them.

They would certainly be helpful to me, though, since I wasn't a linux user back when that was how they all ran.

I even took a detour and looked at Linux From Scratch. Turns out it is Systemd From Scratch.

Count me in as interested in the guide. I was going to start playing around with this today, but found my bookmarked link didn't work. Searched the forums and found this thread. So yes, the raw XML would be better than nothing.
