also, just discovered that startx begins to partially work when I remove .xinitrc from my home directory.
However, the fluxbox isn't coming up, only some terminal window.

Seems like xinitrc is no longer way to go these days. So where do i specify that fluxbox is the WM I want to use?

Whay are you doing it this way?

Usually you X started automatically in runlevel 5 or by root user.

I think you are wrong about how the OP usually starts X.
It's also not how i usually start X.

I usually use "startx" to start X, and just found my .xinitrc file is not being read. Whatever update did that annoys me a lot.
However, unlike the OP, i don't need root to use startx.

I had awesome (window manager) set to start in my ~/.xinitrc, and in /etc/env.d/90xsession (i may have the name wrong, it's gone now)
Due to some recent change, my .xinitrc was no longer being read when i used startx.
In order to have my .xinitrc read, i removed /etc/env.d/90xsession and ran eselect env update.
Now if i startx as another user, or without my ~/.xinitrc, the default /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc is used instead, giving some terminal windows like you describe.

None of this required root. Maybe you had something in your ~/.xinitrc that was causing problems?

Mine is currently, simply:
Code:

setxkbmap -option compose:ralt
exec awesome
