When I : emerge --ask x11-base/xorg-server, it return:
ERROR: x11-base/xorg-server-1.17.1-r1:: gentoo failed (pretend phase):
sorry,but gcc earliter than 4.0 will not work for xorg-server
now, do what for next? thank you! |

First you have to update your gcc compiler.
emerge -av gcc
You should better update your system completly. |

I really wonder why he does not have 4.xxx gcc on his box. 4.xxx is for at least 3 years on gentoo what it feels like.
emerge --info => check out when was your last sync...
usually advise it may be worth reinstalling when the installation is older than 6 months. afaik. even updating 3 months old installations is kinda annoying in my expierence on my second notebook. |

Try since 2007.
OP, if this is a new install then the stage3 tarball must be ancient.
If this is an abandoned box then you need qualified help to bring it up to date. The question you are asking indicates the task is way over your head.
You can do it, but you must be persistent, do lots (I mean lots) of homework and ask intelligent questions so you can get intelligent answers.
