PostPosted: Mon Jul 06, 2015 3:03 pm    Post subject: [SOLVED] ALSA missing libraries after reboot? Reply with quote

After following the set-up instructions on the ALSA wiki page yesterday, I had a working sound system. Both headphones and speakers worked, and alsamixer could be used to change the volume. Now, after I have shutdown and re-booted my computer, ALSA seems to have broken. The
Code:
alsamixer
command returns
Code:
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
but
Code:
man alsamixer
still returns the manual page.
Code:
speaker-test -t wav -c 2
returns this:
Code:

    speaker-test 1.0.29

    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
    WAV file(s)
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.29/work/alsa-lib-d) cannot find card '0'
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.29/work/alsa-lib-evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such fil
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.29/work/alsa-lib-concat) error evaluating strings
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.29/work/alsa-lib-evaluate) function snd_func_concat returned error: No such file or
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.29/work/alsa-lib-_refer) error evaluating name
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.29/work/alsa-lib-evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned error: No such file or d
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.29/work/alsa-lib-xpand) Evaluate error: No such file or directory
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.29/work/alsa-lib-pen_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory

Further more the speaker do work, but seemingly only to beep. The only way I can get the system to make sound is when I try to move left against the machine name when I am in terminal. This produces a short beep from the speakers, whether or not the headphone are plugged in. These head phones go into a head phone jack and worked fine yesterday. I am using the
Code:
Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05)
audio card if that helps. I haven't done any system upgrades or installed any packages since, I got the sound to work, and the only thing I can think of to cause this is my shutdown and restart my computer.

what does aplay -l show; could be a mis-numbering of cards after
reboot (this happens on my T440S sometimes)

That returns:
Code:
aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...

is alsa service running? (though I'm not sure you need it
just to see the cards)

I'm not quite sure.
Code:
genkernel --menuconfig all
show that the modules I activated yesterday are loaded in my current kernel, but
Code:
modprobe
I think doesn't display any loaded modules for the soundcard. He is the results of modprobe.
Code:

you don't seem to have any sound modules loaded (did you build them
into the kernel?)

if I run lsmod | grep snd I get (intel sound on my T440S):

Code:

snd_hda_codec_hdmi     37828  1
snd_hda_codec_realtek    70079  1
snd_hda_codec_generic    58322  1 snd_hda_codec_realtek
snd_hda_intel          21967  6
snd_hda_controller     20889  1 snd_hda_intel
snd_hda_codec          96089  5 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_controller
snd_hwdep               6264  1 snd_hda_codec
snd_hda_core           26500  5 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_controller
snd_pcm                90331  4 snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_controller
snd_timer              20639  1 snd_pcm
snd                    66185  21 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hwdep,snd_timer,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_pcm,snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel,thinkpad_acpi
soundcore               6595  1 snd

The kernel modules where definitely built into the kernel, otherwise how would I been able to use it? But it does currently seem like none of the modules I compiled into the kernel yesterday are loading today with
Code:
lsmod | grep snd
and
Code:
lsmod | grep hda
both returning nothing. I also went and checked out my genkernel menu and all those modules are still listed as activated in my kernel.

Well, that is weird

can you load the modules manually, i.e.

(as root) modprobe snd-hda-intel ?

Well if I input the command it doesn't display any errors, but if I do
Code:
lsmod | grep snd
it once again displays nothing.

You should look at your kernel config in /proc, just to make sure running kernel has all the needed options. There are a few things that can go wrong with kernel install and you may not be running the kernel you think you are.

albirght:
Code:
rmmod: ERROR: Module snd_hda_intel is builtin.

Buffoon: What file would that be? There's no clearly named kernel configuration file. Do you mean the one in /usr/src/linux?

Do you have /proc/config.gz?

Code:
zcat /proc/config.gz >> /usr/src/linux/.config

, for example.

Kinda weird. /boot and /dev/sda2 refuse to mount but your second command still works, and outputs:

The first thing I would do is run a check on your disk. If I booted and had missing things, I would run smartctl right off the bat. If you need it, you should emerge smartmontools. After they are merged, you can check SMART data this way.
Code:

~ $ sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda
smartctl 6.3 2014-07-26 r3976 [x86_64-linux-4.0.5-gentoo] (local build)

Selective self-test flags (0x0):
After scanning selected spans, do NOT read-scan remainder of disk.
If Selective self-test is pending on power-up, resume after 0 minute delay.

That is the output from my disk. As you can see, it is in perfect health. If you want to run a disk check, you would do sudo smartctl -t long /dev/sda. Replace /dev/sda with the drive you wish to check. It will tell you how long the test will take. I recommend leaving the system alone while it tests. Also, when finished, you would run sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda to see the results. If the results say your disk is fine, then I am off-base here. However, if your disk fails the check, you can backup your data before losing more than your sound.

Are you sure, your boot partition is mounted before you install your kernel?
Quote:
Kinda weird. /boot and /dev/sda2 refuse to mount

What is the problem? Post your fstab.
I think, your kernel install is not in the right folder.

@The_Great_Sephiroth
I passed, so I think this is a fstab issue.
@seb8
Here: https://bpaste.net/show/4ca448650129
I created it following specifications from the Gentoo handbook, so I'm not quite sure what I've messed up.

No, usually I just run
Code:
 genkernel --menuconfig all

and it has worked. I've activated several kernel modukles in the past that have worked, and stayed activated, so I am not quite sure why it is effecting my system now.

Maybe I am wrong but it's strange.
You use grub or grub2?
What "mount /boot" say?

I am using grub2.
Code:
mount /boot

returns:
Code:
mount: special device /dev/BOOT does not exist
