After following the set-up instructions on the ALSA wiki page yesterday, I had a working sound system. Both headphones and speakers worked, and alsamixer could be used to change the volume. Now, after I have shutdown and re-booted my computer, ALSA seems to have broken. The command returns | Code: | | cannot open mixer: No such file or directory |

Further more the speaker do work, but seemingly only to beep. The only way I can get the system to make sound is when I try to move left against the machine name when I am in terminal. This produces a short beep from the speakers, whether or not the headphone are plugged in. These head phones go into a head phone jack and worked fine yesterday. audio card if that helps. I haven't done any system upgrades or installed any packages since, I got the sound to work, and the only thing I can think of to cause this is my shutdown and restart my computer.

what does aplay -l show; could be a mis-numbering of cards after
reboot (this happens on my T440S sometimes)

| The kernel modules where definitely built into the kernel, otherwise how would I been able to use it? But it does currently seem like none of the modules I compiled into the kernel yesterday are loading today with and both returning nothing. I also went and checked out my genkernel menu and all those modules are still listed as activated in my kernel. |

| You should look at your kernel config in /proc, just to make sure running kernel has all the needed options. There are a few things that can go wrong with kernel install and you may not be running the kernel you think you are. |

The first thing I would do is run a check on your disk. If I booted and had missing things, I would run smartctl right off the bat. If you need it, you should emerge smartmontools. After they are merged, you can check SMART data this way.

That is the output from my disk. As you can see, it is in perfect health. If you want to run a disk check, you would do sudo smartctl -t long /dev/sda. Replace /dev/sda with the drive you wish to check. It will tell you how long the test will take. I recommend leaving the system alone while it tests. Also, when finished, you would run sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda to see the results. If the results say your disk is fine, then I am off-base here. However, if your disk fails the check, you can backup your data before losing more than your sound.

What is the problem? Post your fstab.
I think, your kernel install is not in the right folder. |

I passed, so I think this is a fstab issue.

I created it following specifications from the Gentoo handbook, so I'm not quite sure what I've messed up.

No, usually I just run

and it has worked. I've activated several kernel modukles in the past that have worked, and stayed activated, so I am not quite sure why it is effecting my system now. |

What "mount /boot" say? |
