I am running KDE 5 and recently (not sure which update caused it) all
my gtk apps (firefox, thunderbird, gimp, etc) render with huge UI fonts
and icons. There content is also way too big.

This is because I have set kde "force fonts DPI" to 157 (correct for
my screen). On a new user with DPI set to 96 the gtk apps look OK.

There are workarounds for some apps but they are highly unsatisfactory.

I wonder if anyone knows a fix for this.

Install "kde-plasma/kde-gtk-config" and check the configuration in systemsettings5, or look the file ".gtkrc-2.0" in your HOME

To be more precise: adjust the gtk-font-name key in your ~/.gtkrc-2.0 and ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini for gtk3.
I have set it to gtk-font-name="DejaVu Sans Book 8" in both, I run 118 DPI and everything looks ok.

thanks to both repliers; unfortunately, I already had that setting

BUT, changing "DejaVu Sans Book 8" to "DejaVu Sans 8" restored
gtk apps to perfection

don't know why Sans Book is missing ...

You could just check the difference in matching for the font with 'fc-match -s '...
Well, that is unless it's something pango/Qt specific...
