I used the manual Steam install from our wiki and downloaded BL2 thru Steam. See my sig for hardware, but the game runs great at 1600x900 with everything maxed out. No stutters even with lots happening onscreen. No techical glitches, crashes or any other problems, either.

I just have to say, on a nontechnical note, that the game is unexpectedly good. I'm one of those people who just loved STALKER, mostly SOC. The openness of the world, the mission-based system, the necessity to buy and trade up your equipment, even the cash and scavenging aspects. I most recently played the Metro series and I found them frustrating. There is no freedom of movement, you can't climb or jump over anything, the game is absolutely linear and unidirectrional, and most battles are intentionally restricted to a specific area. I think BL2 is heavily influenced by both the HL series, and STALKER. The game encourages and rewards exploration, which is something I enjoy in a game. If you haven't tried it, here's one thumbs up.

Nvidia proprietary driver or nouveau driver? I played this game but lost interest 20 mins in. I found the characters very eccentric and the game engine wierd (the 2D-ish nature of it). I'm playing Bioshock infinite right now, also Steam summer sale is on, right now.

All philosophic considerations aside, if you want good 3d in linux, you must get nvidia hardware and their closed-source driver. I mean, have you seen benchmarks comparing the options?

I actually love the cell-shaded look. Of course, I play a bit of TF2.

Give it another chance. I think the gameplay is great once you get used to the environment.

If you like BL2 try BL-prequal its from jacks perspective as the hero but it is set on the moon. the very low grav is... almost Tribes like.

Valve are about to release Source2 which is optimised for low-spec GPU (think intel) but providing the present performance (think binary nvidia & a gtx line...). From what Valve have stated porting is REALLY easy and dota2 is about to be pushed out with it.

Maybe they will backport their old game (not so old...) and this could strongly help the FOSS drivers

Just saw a comparison between Windows 8 and Ubuntu - and it appears to be somewhat slower on *buntu (oh wonder ! - with Unity  )

Hopefully it runs fluid here (GTX 760 should have enough "horse"-power)

Will probably give this a try soon once I grabbed a copy

from them currently running Humble Bundle offer

Confirmed !

it's working fabulously here

except: shift doesn't work - keeps on displaying

Authenticating,

then doesn't prompt for login data, etc. ...

Anyone else having that issue ?

I remember having seen it shortly during the very first start :?

Now it simply keeps on failing ...

... besides that it works flawlessly

Borderlands 2 works well with Steam / Gentoo. A year or so I played it on Win7 and thought it would be fun to replay in Linux. I have no issues with it.

I only have a problem with day-night cycle. I only have day. Then I read on the steam forums that it must by related to DynamicLights being disabled. I don't even know where to enable that.

I see the day-night cycles in Gentoo - Steam - Borderlands 2. I have no idea where to turn them on/off.
