PostPosted: Sun Apr 26, 2015 7:53 pm    Post subject: Window manager problem Reply with quote

Hi,
I think I have a problem with my window manager, strange things happen In the following scenarios:
1) Opening a video (vlc \ mplayer) in full screen
2) Opening a youtube or other embedded video in full screen

When I do the following actions it seems like my desktop is stuck.
I'm not sure what window manager I have, I'm using mate (old gnome) desktop environment

Thanks!

It sounds more like you are having a graphics card setup problem. What card is it? Please post emerge --info, too.

Posted it here, for everybody to see, data that fits forum posts should be posted here. With nvidia you should be using vdpau for hardware acceleration. I do not see vdpau enabled globally, is it enabled locally?

After adding the flag vdpau I have re-updated my world file: "emerge -DNuv world".
Still I encounter the same error.

You have to configure your player(s) to use vdpau.

I think the point is being missed. The problem is with my window manager and not my media players.
The problem can happen also in my web browser when I try to full screen a video, and when I try to browse for a file.

Stuck as in how is it stuck? You can't exit full screen mode or your system is locked up? What actions do you have to perform to get it unstuck?

The default window manager for the MATE DE is x11-wm/marco a fork of gnomes metacity-wm.

I am running the latest stable release of MATE as well. I decided to test full screen mode over at youtube. I am able to go from full screen to windowed mode, at will, without issues. So I suspect the problem lies elsewhere. I believe bugs were reported with marco-1.8.0 using maximized java based applications. I haven't experienced any. You could try to install ~x11-wm/marco-1.8.2 which is supposed to fix the issues, but again I think your problem lies someplace else.

Whats the output of
Code:
emerge -pv mate

Whats in your /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords file?

still after upgrading to marco-1.8.2 the problem persists.

emerge -pv mate returns:
Code:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies  .... done!
[ebuild   R    ] mate-base/mate-1.8.0::gentoo  USE="base extras themes (-bluetooth)" 0 KiB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 KiB

 * IMPORTANT: 24 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news read to view new items.

my /etc/porage/package.accept_keywords:
Code:
#required by reaver (argument)
=net-wireless/reaver-1.4 ~amd64
#required by dev-java/oracle-jre-bin (argument)
=dev-java/oracle-jre-bin-1.7.0.21 ~amd64

I don't see anything here that would cause this kind of problem.

Your /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords file is a little stale
Code:

#required by dev-java/oracle-jre-bin (argument)
=dev-java/oracle-jre-bin-1.7.0.21 ~amd64  <----- No longer in portage
# required by winetricks (argument)
=app-emulation/winetricks-20130707 ~amd64  <----- No longer in portage
# required by dpkt (argument)
=dev-python/dpkt-1.8 ~amd64  <----- Current version in portage is 1.8-r1

I would update this file and any packages as necessary.

I am assumeing you have read and followed all of the related NEWS items and updated your system as necessary.

However, according to your posted emerge --info you still have (mmx mmxext sse sse2) set in "USE=" in your make.conf file rather then being set as follows
Code:

CPU_FLAGS_X86="mmx mmxext sse sse2 sse3 ssse3"  <----- These are mine based on my cpu
If your system is current and the problems still persist than something is either missing or mis-configured.

Please expand on this as the term "stuck" is to generic and does not provide any useful information to determine what the problem might or could possibly be.
