[SOLVED] tough time making x2go work

  • Quote

Post by devsk » Wed May 27, 2015 7:22 am

I am trying to get a KDE session going for x2go but I keep getting this failure:

Code: Select all

Info: Using shared memory parameters 1/1/0/0K.
Info: Using alpha channel in render extension.
Info: Not using local device configuration changes.
keyboard file created
Error: Aborting session with 'Could not open default font 'fixed''.
Session: Aborting session at 'Tue May 26 23:22:22 2015'.
Session: Session aborted at 'Tue May 26 23:22:22 2015'.
Particularly:

Error: Aborting session with 'Could not open default font 'fixed''.

I have all the X11 fixed fonts in /usr/share/fonts but I can't get rid of this error. Does anybody have any ideas on how to tackle this? I remember seeing this issue with NX Server a long time ago and dealing with it somehow but don't remember how.

Any ideas?

This seems like the failing code:

Code: Select all

        InitFonts();
        if (loadableFonts) {
            SetFontPath(0, 0, (unsigned char *)defaultFontPath, &error);
        } else {
            if (SetDefaultFontPath(defaultFontPath) != Success)
                ErrorF("failed to set default font path '%s'",
                        defaultFontPath);
        }
        if (!SetDefaultFont(defaultTextFont))
            FatalError("could not open default font '%s'", defaultTextFont);
So, SetDefaultFont() is failing to set any fonts. When I run nxagent -fn "9x15", it can't load that font also, although I know that font is present in the fontpath and loaded. Very strange!

I have been using x2go without a problem for a long time now, but I did have early issues.

I think the solution(hack?) is to open session preferences, select the "Input/Output" tab and deselect the "Set display dpi" checkbox

The following quote from the x2go website FAQ suggests it to be so as well
How do I customize font sizes in X2Go sessions?

Some people have asked for font size customizations in X2Go session windows. Please use the DPI value in the session setup to customize font sizes within your X2Go sessions:

70 DPI → quite readable fonts
90 DPI → the default font size
120 DPI → miniature font size

I did that and the same result. I have a feeling that the nxagent code is too old for this fontsproto (2.1.3) and libXfont (1.5.1) and xorg-server (1.17) versions.

are you running ~amd64? What versions do you have for fontsproto, linXfont, xorg-server?

Man, this thing is as hard to setup as it was like 6-7 years (that's when server side was known as freenx). The issues don't leave much log. In this case, it just says "Could not open default font 'fixed'". It won't say why!

I am stuck. I don't know what else to try now! If you could provide me versions of your packages, may be I could try those out. Its some sort of library incompatibility. Something very basic is broken between NX and X libraries.

So, I went with strace to nail it down: as expected everything is working fine and then "Could not open default font 'fixe'" out of the flue:

Code: Select all

22:11:10.601581 open("/usr/share/fonts/Speedo/fonts.dir", O_RDONLY) = 4
22:11:10.601624 fstat(4, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=1689, ...}) = 0

@baaann: what steps did you take to set it up?

I pretty much emerged the packages on both machines.
Added my remote user to the x2gouser.
Initialized the sqlite DB.
Setup passwordless key based ssh login for the user.
And tried to connect using x2goclient.

I tried the localhost to rule out any differences between the client and server (although both are Gentoo ~amd64 and using the same packages). That resulted in the same issue.

Sorry, as I said earlier it has been a long time and I can't remember clearly. I definitely remember deselecting the DPI checkbox but you have tried that.

Maybe it is worth trying either net-misc/pyhoca-gui or net-misc/pyhoca-cli, I am afraid I have no experience of either.

I finally decoded this issue. I can't believe it. The reason why its not able to load the default font and default cursor was that language specific fonts were missing from the /usr/share/fonts/misc folder. Those are missing because I have '-nls' in my global USE flags.

I had to spin up an Ubuntu 14.04 VM to figure this out...:) This is a packaging bug. nx package on Gentoo should force the 'nls' USE flag on media-fonts/font-misc-misc because without that nxagent is completely broken. I wonder how Xorg and Xvnc are fine without those! May be there is legacy code in nxagent which needs removal...:)
