Hello.

Can anybody tell me how to make it work together? Is it possible at all?

What I have:
Intel Core i5-4670K (Haswell)
AMD Radeon HD 7850
Kernel 3.17 (also tried 3.14)
Xorg-server 1.16 (also tried 1.15)
Gnome 3.14 (also tried 3.12)

What I did (as handbook says):
/etc/portage/make.conf: VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx"

eselect profile set default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/gnome/systemd

X -configure (or created xorg.conf manually)

aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

eselect opengl set ati

And what I get (in different combinations):
1. "Segmentation fault" errors.
2. "Unable to initialize Clutter" errors.
3. "Using smp_processor_id() in preemptible code" errors.
4. Startx almost always works, unlike GDM which always says "Ooops, something went wrong".

I understand that I do something wrong. I do not understand what is it :-).

You didn't do anything wrong, most likely.

Though ugh... looks like ATI still hasn't fixed their driver to work with systemd/gdm... I've been having trouble with fglrx and gdm/systemd since forever. I'm currently using lightdm as the display manager instead of gdm to work around this problem.

You could also try the OSS ati radeonhd driver to see if that works with gdm.

Hm. I found in many places in the Internet that the root of the problem is gdm, so I tried to use slim - with no success.

I'll try to run lightdm, thank you.

Slim should work, I was using slim with gnome and systemd, but decided to use lightdm because slim is a bit too simplistic. Main reason: dual head. Slim puts the login window straddling the two monitors when lightdm does it correctly and sticks it on just one.

The root of the problem is actually fglrx. Fglrx should NOT segfault/oops when running any display manager, including gdm, on it. Gdm works fine on my Intel graphics/driver machines, and I suspect nvidia and the OSS driver will work too.

Could you please tell me which versions of kernel, xorg, ati-drivers do you use? Did you specially select them, or just emerged the freshest versions from the current portage? If you use genkernel to compile the kernel - I'd be appreciated if you give me your /etc/kernels/kernel-config* :-).

I'm still trying to find what I'm doing wrong.

Most of the packages I used latest stable from portage, except for the kernel which is likely a few versions behind for most of my machines, and fglrx which I'm using ~amd64.

I did not use genkernel to build, I manually built the kernels. If you get into graphics mode at all, I think your setup should be mostly working except for the fglrx-systemd-gdm problem that ATI hasn't yet fixed.

The Gentoo/Systemd/Gnome boxes I have... and so far they get into Gnome just fine through their graphical display managers.

i7-2700k - Gnome 3.12 - fglrx - lightdm (dual head)
C2D-E6700 - Gnome 3.12 - i965 - gdm
i5-3317U - Gnome 3.12 - HD4000 - gdm
Z3735G - Gnome 3.14 - HD4000 - gdm

I have yet to update my Gnome 3.12 boxes to 3.14 as it just got stabilized...

I'm tired of searching for the path from this dependency hell - so I'll try KDE.

I just let gnome 3.14 in on my fglrx box. Bad move.
Gnome no longer starts up (lightdm still works but gnome does not start.)
I wonder if this qualifies for a mask... at least for fglrx.
http://forums.funtoo.org/topic/267-gnome-314-doesnt-boot-i-suspect-cluttereglfglrx/

In any case I also upgraded my other hd4000 box to gnome 3.14 and it works just fine, so I think at least the Intel (OSS) drivers work fine with Gnome, but fglrx doesn't like clutter and egl/gles2 ... hmm.

Might need to try the OSS Radeon driver, and see how much 3D performance loss there is...

Protip: Disable KMS/Radeon driver when using fglrx. ahhh console works again for debugging...
