|

I've tried to compile the libreoffice update to version 4.4.1.2 now several times, but it consistently freezes during compilation. Does anyone know what's going on here?
I'm not quite sure what information might be relevant, besides emerge --info:

The build.log would be very relevant. If what you describe as a freeze really is a total system freeze, then it most likely would be a hardware fault (e.g. RAM). |

Thanks, both! By 'freeze' I did indeed mean total system freeze. The manufacturer's hardware tests at boot didn't find any issues. Taken together with the error posted below, I'm pretty sure now that it's not a hardware problem.

That's a great question! I changed it to native. Then I recompiled gcc and also decided to give libreoffice another try with the improved compiler options.
This time, the system didn't freeze, but the build still failed:

The complete build.log is here. Should I turn this into my first bug report? |

I've had large compiles freeze due to the file system being out of inodes; df -i would be a worthwhile check.

I'm currently trying again with MAKEOPTS=-j4. In my case, the inodes don't seem to be in short supply:
Code: | Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on
/dev/sda3 1310720 683541 627179 53% / |
This is well into compilation, and inode use doesn't seem to increase too much as the compilation proceeds. But let's wait and see. I'll report back here! |

I had some internal compiler errors on another machine, too. Possibly a heat problem?
My problems seem to have gone away after I fixed another issue:
When shutting down, I got a warning that lib64/rc/cache was not writable (because it did not exist). I created that folder and maybe by coincidence things seemed to work better after this.
However, I didn't find an explanation what this directory is actually for, so it probably was just a coincidence. _________________ Kali Ma

This time, the compilation lasted a bit longer, but again failed eventually with the same error message on a different source file. This is getting more and more mysterious...

There were some warnings during the compilation that the CPU would be throttled down or something like that. But shouldn't the system itself make sure that the CPU doesn't overheat? Should I try a different governor?

Thanks for sharing! But my lib64/rc/cache already exists. |

MAKEOPTS=-j2 finally did the trick, although the compilation took much longer. I don't quite understand why this made it work, but I'm happy that it did Thanks, Jaglover! |

Impact: Less memory required, less overall system load. Of course that matters, especially with possible heat, defective memory, or out-of-memory problems. |
