My typo, fstab does read /boot
wgetpaste for fstab
https://bpaste.net/show/3a727d9981cf
mount /boot gives "mount : special device /dev/sda does not exist"
ls -l /boot gives "total 0"

Just an update and a thank you to the guys who helped a newbie like me along the way trying to get me sorted with a Gentoo install. I did get there in the end with time and determination.
I printed out, read and watched videos studied input codes for a week and then started again slowly piece by piece day by day and can now confirm I have a fully working Gentoo kde desktop system which took many hours of compiling, but much experience gained, so very pleased with the outcome.
