Hi everyone, I'm back! :D
But with another problem. Again. :(
This time, I've been trying to run 'emerge @preserved-rebuild' as Portage has instructed me to, resulting in it trying to re-merge PAM. However, it failed during the 'compile phase'. So following the advice of Portage once again, I shall post this 'emerge --info' here, in the hope that this may be of some help.

Using emerge --info '=sys-libs/pam-1.1.8-r2::gentoo'

sys-libs/pam-1.1.8-r2::gentoo was built with the following:
USE="berkdb cracklib nls -audit -debug -nis (-selinux) -test -vim-syntax" ABI_X86="64 -32 -x32"
CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-O2 -pipe"

Any ideas? I don't feel like I've done some insane 'optimilizations' to GCC, but who knows? Thank-you for sacrificing your time and assistance for this newbie. :D

Posting emerge --info is helpful, but we also need to know the error message. Please post the failure from pam.

My greatest apologies, but I'm unable to do that at this point in time. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of running the eclean-kernel script, hoping to remove the remnants of my old kernel. However, I ended up accidentally deleting BOTH, rendering my system unbootable. As I cannot follow through with this post at this point in time, I shall mark it as solved by virtue of having borked Gentoo. Once again, apologies for bothering everyone! :(
