Hello

I'm trying to use KDE-3.5.10 again so I added kde-sunset overlay and disabled hal USE flag
but I get errors when trying to compile kdelibs-3.5.10-r6

What info is needed to help me?

You can also give TDE a try. In case you don't know, it's a fork of kde3 which will hopefully work better than old kde would on a current gentoo system.

These are the basic instructions.

https://bitbucket.org/mgebert/gentoo-trinity/src/d8181b7003c1f7c04ce1c52fae55a1e368d340a5/Documentation/INSTALL?at=default

But I haven't tested it myself.

A fork you say... guess it's like mate vs gnome2 ;)
I will try that but still I would like to have KDE3

The only thing that portage suggested me to do is add USE flag utempter

Well, then we might be able to help you if you provide the build log. The portage output should be telling you where the build log for the failed package is. Usually, in some dir under /var/tmp/portage/.

To me, that seems like kdelibs 3.x can't be compiled against recent versions of openssl, but I could be wrong.

I would either ask the overlay maintainer(s) about the issue or try to install an older (pre-1.0) openssl version. That might not work at all but since 0.x is slotted I think that it should not create any problem, at least).

I think you should be able to emerge openssl:0.9.8 without removing the other slot.

EDITED: that doesn't mean the rest of the theory is gonna work. It truly depends on the make scripts, but if it's picking the wrong version right now I guess it's probable that it will continue to do so even if the older one is present.

And, anyway, we don't really know if that's the problem, but just a guess.

A lot of "ifs", if you ask me :lol:

Oh, indeed...and it would help...not in the slightest.
openssl is slotted in the exactly same way libpng is slotted - lib only for binary only packages.

If you really want to stick with qt3 (though really, qt4 is in for EOL in about three months (planed qt 5.5 release)), you're better of googling around for hints on how to port kdelibs 3 to more recent openssl (after all, most likely many other packages were using that API that's got changed ).

I just installed from it so I am pretty sure it exists. I used a couple beers last night, but nothing serious :lol:

It is just not listed in layman by default. You need to actually read the instructions I linked above.

okay then..
repository added (had to emerge dev-vcs/mercurial to make it work)
removed few blocking packages

and compillied tdelibs with -upower because I'm still using udev without systemd
Code:
# emerge -pv tdelibs

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N    *] dev-qt/tqtinterface-14.0.0:3::trinity  0 KiB
[ebuild  N    *] dev-libs/dbus-1-tqt-14.0.0::trinity  0 KiB
[ebuild  N    *] trinity-base/tdelibs-14.0.0:14::trinity  USE="alsa avahi consolekit fam spell tiff udisks xrandr -arts -cups -jpeg2k -lua -lzma -networkmanager -old_udisks -openexr -sudo -upower -utempter -xcomposite" 17394 KiB

Total: 3 packages (3 new), Size of downloads: 17394 KiB
#

but I got error... Failed to emerge dev-qt/tqtinterface-14.0.0, Log file: http://wklej.org/id/1663175/

I have no idea why in your case the script is looking into /usr/qt, mine shows this:

Code:

-- Checking for Qt3...
--   QT_PREFIX_DIR is set to QTDIR
--   QT_PREFIX_DIR : /usr/tqt3
--   QT_INCLUDE_DIR: /usr/tqt3/include
-- Native TQt3 detected
--   QT_LIBRARY_DIR: /usr/tqt3/lib64
--   QT_BINARY_DIR : /usr/tqt3/bin
--   MOC_EXECUTABLE: /usr/tqt3/bin/tqmoc (using Qt 3.5.0)
--   UIC_EXECUTABLE: /usr/tqt3/bin/tquic
-- Performing Test HAVE_USABLE_QT3
-- Performing Test HAVE_USABLE_QT3 - Failed
-- Looking for native TQt3...
-- Performing Test HAVE_USABLE_QT3
-- Performing Test HAVE_USABLE_QT3 - Success
-- Performing Test HAVE_PATCHED_QT3
-- Performing Test HAVE_PATCHED_QT3 - Failed
-- Looking for patched native TQt3...
-- Performing Test HAVE_PATCHED_QT3
-- Performing Test HAVE_PATCHED_QT3 - Success

As you see, it looks into /usr/tqt3, which is where tqt3 installed.

Have you manually set some qt3 related paths or something? Do you have some leftovers from some other experiment in /etc/env.d?

What does this command output for you?

Code:
# cat /etc/env.d/44tqt*
PATH=/usr/tqt3/bin
ROOTPATH=/usr/tqt3/bin
LDPATH=/usr/tqt3/lib64:/usr/tqt3/lib32:/usr/tqt3/lib
QMAKESPEC=linux-g++-64
MANPATH=/usr/tqt3/doc/man
QTDIR=/usr/tqt3

Also, I am no systemd user. I was able to emerge tdelibs with upower support, no problem there.

The only flaw I found during the merge of this thing was that some package couldn't be downloaded from the repository, and I had to manually good for them, pick them from some other place and put them in distfiles. I think it was tdelibs and tdebase, not sure.

there
Code:

# cat /etc/env.d/44tqt3*
PATH=/usr/tqt3/bin
ROOTPATH=/usr/tqt3/bin
LDPATH=/usr/tqt3/lib64:/usr/tqt3/lib32:/usr/tqt3/lib
QMAKESPEC=linux-g++-64
MANPATH=/usr/tqt3/doc/man
#

I didn't manually set anything I'm too dumb ;)
the only env.d I tried to use was enable-broadway-backend in GTK+3 :P

Does it work if you run env-update and then try again? Please, do it in the same shell where you are trying to emerge tde.

Trinity uses cmake as its build system. I donk know much about it, and I have no idea how it reads the paths. What cmake version are you using?

Same cmake version.

Mmm, is there anything else qt related in env.d?

Code:

grep -i qt /etc/env.d/*

I am guessing that there must be some qt version or a leftover from the sunset overlay which is causing this.

What does the last grep command I posted report?

Maybe that overlay left some cruft behind, it shouldn't happen but... for now it is just a theory.

Also, did you unmerge and depclean all the packages from that overlay? Did you run etc-update in case some config file needs updating?

as for etc-update I hate it because everytime I do it, it changes my language settings and kills local overlay :(

I had unmerged all packages from that overlay
Code:

# eix --installed-from-overlay kde-sunset
No matches found.
#

I made emerge --depclean and it did remove over 100 packages
now I get
Code:

# emerge -pv tdelibs

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

Sorry. I don't know where else to look.

But, as for etc-update, you truly need to run it when portage tells you so. Otherwise things might break.

You are supposed to review the proposed changes and accept only the ones you want, which usually are those on files you didn't edit yourself, then, discard the rest.
