Hello, after yesterday's update I am not able to log in Gnome through lightdm. After setting the credentials, the screen "Oh no! Something has wrong" appears. Yesterday I installed a great amount of packages, including the new kernel, and many others were removed. I noticed in the lightdm logs that the video driver was missing, so I reinstalled it, and this made some progress... Now I am stuck at the error:
Code:

edit: I gave up for today, still no idea what is causing it. These are my logs / settings:

Note that eselect lists two interfaces for opengl: ati (set) and xorg-x11. I tried to switch to xorg-x11, but the system crashed so badly I was not even able to boot:

hey, I reverted my kernel to 3.14.33, the ati drivers to 14.6_beta2, the xorg server to 1.15.2, and I am still having this problem. Not sure what to do next?

I appear to be having the same problem after upgrading to GNOME 3.14. Any progress on solving this issue?

try this in your .xinitrc

Code:

export COGL_DRIVER=gl
export COGL_OVERRIDE_GL_VERSION=1.4
export COGL_RENDERER=GLX
export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib64/opengl/ati/lib/libGL.so
exec gnome-session

That seems to have removed the errors from journactl, but startx still takes me to a screen which just says 'Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again.' So, GNOME is still broken.... :(o

This seems to be a pretty common issue with ATI cards and Gnome 3.14; there is also a thread about it here for Redhat: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1054435

Spent several hours trying to fix this already, including trying to mask Gnome 3.14 and go back to Gnome 3.12. I also can't get Gnome to start at all.

The hack in .xinitrc works for startx, but I cannot get login to work with LightDM.

Note that eselect lists two interfaces for opengl: ati (set) and xorg-x11. I tried to switch to xorg-x11, but the system crashed so badly I was not even able to boot:

Code:

What interface should be used? Ati or x11 ?

Kind regards,

That looks like hard drive problems...

That seems to have removed the errors from journactl, but startx still takes me to a screen which just says 'Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again.' So, GNOME is still broken.... :(o

did you try re-emerging ati-drivers?

concur with your conclusion. I have xfce4 and gnome on a single machine -- xfce4 works and gnome fails with the useless error page.

running
Code:
emerge --unmerge pulseaudio gnome $(qlist -IC gnome-base) $(qlist -IC gnome-extra) $(qlist -IC x11-drivers) xorg-server
emerge -av pulseaudio gnome pulseaudio skype xorg-server $(qlist -IC x11-drivers)

does no good

Ha, that worked! GNOME started up again.

I am still having this issue actually. The workaround suggested by zaraki kenpachi does not work for me.
