I am not sure if i am more interested in a rant or solving the continuous problem i keep having for quite some time now and in all my systems at some point.

Seems i cannot let a few weeks go by without updating EVERYTHING without getting a bunch of conflicting versions of the same package preventing installing very much whatever is wanted.
Even with updating everything; sometimes i get this problem too.

Just look at the second part of the log. Maybe i am wrong, but somewhere, someone is not having strong enough espressos.

The amount of different version for gobject-introspection or glib that are needed for whatever is just unbelievable. Can we stick with one version ? Is there a way to get the maintainers in agreement ?
Do we need to -DuN world every 24h ? to try to avoid this because i am getting tired or rollbacks, backtracks and unmerges and merges of dependencies to solve this type of thing all the time.

Seriously :x

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

I suspect that the cause of this problem is simply that portage isn't handling package.use.stable mask as smoothly as package.{accept_keywords,mask}.

Most likely one of the packages has an abi_x86_32 dep, which is masked in stable, which results in unstable glib being pulled.
As gobject-introspection depends (for safety sake) on glib from the same release cycle, the block is a must.

Another system that was updated recently the same type of crap. I have too many gentoos to spend days resolving these problems. W[/b]hat happend to IF IT IS NOT BROKEN; DONT FIX IT.

Is this a method to drive people away from gentoo ?!!?!?!?!?

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

I dont even have X apps on this one

Just a suggestion, you could stop calling it "[UNSOLVED]" maybe?

It's extremely rude towards everyone else in need of help on the forums who isn't demanding special attention on each thread they make.

All my problem topics are quite well marked as unsolved or solved as their status is and quite well organized accordingly.

This topic was initially [SOLVED], then it was changed because it got broken even more.
What is rude and of extremely of bad taste and even possibly of bad intention is WHO is responsible for this issues to happen.

Maybe some gentoo devs should a bit more conservative like debian devs. Maybe ? Could that be a good suggestion without having to go on a rant ? Is there a problem being a bit more conservative ?

How about another option for make.conf

PACKAGE_VERSIONING="10-versions-of-the-same-package build-5-systems-in-one lets-see-what-breaks involuntary-arch-tester -stable-system"

I am very upset with all this. I got up 2h hours ago to work on something; 2h later plus yesterday's time; i still have not fixed one system. Worst of it is having to unmerge package by package and break even more to try to get portage to recover from there and this has been happening since more than a year.
If i don't -DuN world on a regular almost daily basis; portage breaks. I have been removing apps from my OS's just to keep them lean and with less need software and still have problems. Heck even without X i have these problems.

The only attention needed here is to find who is responsible for these types of problems and make these people famous.

There used to be a time that the only packages that were needed to upgrade on a regular basis to keep the system stable were less than 5. Now some of these so called devs like to change dependency versions for every little package they can think of.

These are not software mistakes. These are intentional problems and its been going for a while like that. On my count; over a year.
Today is perl, the other day was python, last month was something else and in my case i don't even have more than 15 entries on package keywords or highly custom USE choices. So long for a "stable" option.

I spend more time fixing my netbooks than actually using them !!! ... Why do i even run a a binhost on the lan to save time.

The solution presented by jburns did not solve the problem for one of my systems.

Code:
Total: 34 packages (28 upgrades, 3 new, 3 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 130,191 kB
Conflict: 3 blocks (3 unsatisfied)

I'm am tired of -e world and -e system. Seriously stop playing with portage. 10 years of gentoo but i am now considering another distro for my next installs.

I really feel your pain.

Recently, as per suggestion in a thread in which I was making the same complaint, I only check for GLSA's. That way the dust can settle on stuff like this before I update. Just started so not sure how it will work out but want to stay with Gentoo if at all possible so worth a shot.

Well, the Gentoo developers are folllowing the upstrems. While sometimes a package may be marked as stable before it is truly ready for that, by and large stabilized packages are indeed stable.

This does not mean that you avoid a lot of churn if you commit youself to really frequent updates. I think that having a daily update schedule is a fetish. Let things mellow. Update packages with vulnerabilities right away, but let most of them ride for longer intervals.

This is what I do. The other thing I do that keeps me happy as a Gentoo user is take advantage of a build host. I work out all those dependency conflicts in the chroot where I build packages: I emerge only binary packges on my production systems. I never have that upgrade-time downtime like I had before.

I had the same problem with perl packages. It was solved - thanks to RazielFMX - by running
Code:
emerge -uD1a $(qlist -IC 'virtual/perl-*')
perl-cleaner --all

Such a portage mess occurs periodically, but the last one seems the ugliest I saw since I use Gentoo.
I believe it will be fixed in a few days.

Than is what i do and that is been the problem. Long gone ae the days of just update a few packages without worring about general breakage.

Quote:
Code:
emerge -uD1a $(qlist -IC 'virtual/perl-*')  perl-cleaner --all

I have tried that and only solved the problem in one of my systems.

Here is another interesting detail.

Code:
Calculating dependencies             ... done!
[ebuild     U  ] dev-lang/perl-5.18.2-r1 [5.16.3]

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

dev-lang/perl:0

  (dev-lang/perl-5.16.3::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    dev-lang/perl:0/5.16=[-build(-)] required by

AND WHY WOULD SOMEONE mark a dependency stable which in it's turn depend on a package which is marked and quite well identified as a system breaker ?? WHY ?

WHY ? What is the technical reason for such ? Get involuntary arch testers ?

Code:
The following mask changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.unmask" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by virtual/perl-Pod-Simple-3.280.0-r1
# required by virtual/perl-Pod-Simple (argument)
# /usr/portage/ebuilds/profiles/package.mask:
# Vladimir Smirnov <civil@gentoo.org> (27 May 2014)
# Masked for testing, will defenitely cause major breakage
# Single modules with 5.20 versions added here too -dilfridge
=dev-lang/perl-5.20.0-r1

Why do we get upgrades with dependencies of packages which are well identified as problems ? what is the fun in this ?

Code:
# emerge -uD1a $(qlist -IC 'virtual/perl-*')

 * IMPORTANT: 2 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.

The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.accept_keywords" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by virtual/perl-Pod-Simple-3.280.0-r1
# required by virtual/perl-Pod-Simple (argument)
=dev-lang/perl-5.20.0-r1 ~amd64

The following mask changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.unmask" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by virtual/perl-Pod-Simple-3.280.0-r1
# required by virtual/perl-Pod-Simple (argument)
# /usr/portage/ebuilds/profiles/package.mask:
# Vladimir Smirnov <civil@gentoo.org> (27 May 2014)
# Masked for testing, will defenitely cause major breakage
# Single modules with 5.20 versions added here too -dilfridge
=dev-lang/perl-5.20.0-r1

NOTE: The --autounmask-keep-masks option will prevent emerge
from creating package.unmask or ** keyword changes.

Use --autounmask-write to write changes to config files (honoring
CONFIG_PROTECT). Carefully examine the list of proposed changes,
paying special attention to mask or keyword changes that may expose
experimental or unstable packages.

Here is another one:

Unreal! 15 packages depending on a specific dev-lang/perl version and 24 depending of another dev-lang/perl version while both versions are incompatible with each other

I still have major breakage in the system, lots of missing packages that now are needed for applications and even the sound support packages got affected.
Lets not blame portage because portage does not add packages to itself alone. Getting the idiots that caused this problem out of the development group is the only right thing to do. The severity of the problem clearly shows seriously incompetence.
Gentoo needs to be a bit more conservative with what gets marked as stable.

Does it make sense to have stable upgrades that dependent on broken/problematic packages ? Unbelievable.

HeXiLeD ... not to distract from your most excellent rant ;) but I think you're pointing to the wrong problem. The source of the problem is complexity ... and only tangentially the persons, procedures, etc, that contribute to, and/or work on the assumption of, that complexity. Its an outcome of design (or the absence thereof). As any engineer will tell you the more components you add to a system the greater the complexity and the greater potential for failure (or in other words failure is exponential to the number of components involved and the relation/dependency of those components). Stability requires that the whole operates as a whole to avoid the pull of entropy ("[i]n risk management, negentropy is the force that seeks to achieve effective organisational behaviour and lead to a steady predictable state" wikipedia) but for many reasons we are far from that ideal of "effective organisational behaviour" (a subject which I touch on elsewhere but which is too broad to introduce here).

Anyhow, if we wanted a metric by which to measure complexity we are probably not going to find one as the statistical method of say "lines of code" or "number of packages" doesn't provide much in terms of being able to relate a specific line of code, or package, with the rational behind them, however as complexity is an emergent phenomena such a method does offer some idea of the relation of part to whole (and so some idea of the organisational structure).

Code:
# awk '!/virtual/{++x}END{print x" packages"}' <(qlist -Iv)
654 packages
# awk '!/virtual/{++x}END{print x" packages"}' <(eix -Ic --only-names --system)
30 packages
# awk '{++x}END{print x" packages"}' /var/lib/portage/world
234 packages
# awk '!/virtual/&&/perl/{++x}END{print x" packages"}' <(qlist -Iv)
73 packages
# awk '!/virtual/&&/python/{++x}END{print x" packages"}' <(qlist -Iv)
17 packages

That's 654 packages not including virtuals, with 30 in @system, 234 in world, 73 perl packages and 17 python packages. That probably makes perl the most complex part of an otherwise minimal system.

If we compare this to say dev-libs/glib or dev-libs/gobject-introspection on your install then these would probably be more complex dependency wise, or if not, none the less add to the overall level of complexity, my point being that the part effects the whole.

Looking back to your first post in this thread I can see many new packages pulled in to satisfy some dependency or other all of which are then blocked due to the version of gobject-introspection, this I think illustrates the deeper issue ... we expect that we add layers of dependencies without amplifying the complexity of the whole, in fact we are more focused on this "addition" than in being able to manage the level of complexity (and mis-design) that already exists (ie, perl, or other components we expect to be in place). This leads to calls to "standardise the base system" but again these are often not about simplifying the whole but merely providing {x} for the layer above. Even Linus admits that the linux kernel has become "bloated" and given the focus placed on {x} there is little emphasis given to the basics (ie, the overall design or the principles involved). So, no wonder any distribution has issues keeping on top of things ... the system is simply too complex, too unpredictable, etc, to be otherwise.

best ... khay

ps: any chance you can fix the formating, the lack of line breaks, or unnecessay white space, causes the text to not wrap to the right margin.

I understand your point view and it does make sense up to point.

Sure i have lots of packages on the desktop, but on the netbooks not really and as mentioned before; it does not even uses X and it is barely much more than the default install and i still had problems with that one.

I also have another netbook that i will not even try to update since re-intall will be faster and easier (probably will not get gentoo again). Seriously; some devs have to be trying to push people away/out of gentoo. Maybe they should USE="*" emerge seppuku

I have one last question.

By having a more conservative portage stable tree, does or it not contribute at least to avoid and or minimize some of these problems ?

Do we really need to have a new package release every time someone changes a few commas in the code and have stable dependencies pulling packages that are clearly marked as problematic ?
Maybe we should really have a new portage option.

Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="conservative"

And have updates to be done in a more conservative package release. For example; lets say, not to merge or skip release candidate packages or very small upgrades or even update only crucial system packages such as python, portage and so on.

We don't need 2 unstable trees or even an unstable and less-stable one for involuntary arch testers. These problems have become more and more frequent and for what ? To be the cutting edge of the cutting edge at the expense of the users ? There is no gain there.

... and there is a lot more ... and yes i know that some like python it is a different story.

For those you just got to this topic now; i am not running several trees on one operating system :? i am just being an involuntary arch tester for some gremlins.
The gst-plugins have been a regular headache always conflicting with another version. I have none of these on package.keywords.

But on the bright side; packages in the system will have a brother or sister to play with ... I guess they will not feel alone in the world

Can we PLEASE be a little more conservative ? No one will complain about a stable system/tree.

Would it be possible to have portage to popup an uppgrade to ALL packages in the system when someone goes for emerge -e world and all the upgrades/new packages issue a slot conflict with all the existent installed packages in the system ?

Why ? well, mostly for fun since we have nothing better to do. We promise we will not re-install because that is just too easy and we have way too much time in our hands thats needs to be filled with gremlin activity. :x

Goddamit just unmerge the blocking packages and keep going. What a waste of time posting this stuff all the time. That stuff is incredible complex. You must interfere.

Hi HeXiLeD,

please calm down a bit!

If everybody would update daily, that wouldn't be an issue, but with numerous boxen that are just updated for security issues (like Budoka mentioned via glsa), one can not assume recent versions, so a minimum needs to be defined.

I guess there are at least as much users that want the latest upstream stable also in gentoo stable as people who want a stable system like glsa-only updates.

It is an archtesters job to exactly prevent you from hitting the nastiest things. Nobody has the intention to break stuff for anyone.
Sometimes it is just necessary to depend on certain package-versions. Not because it is funny or raining outside, but because it is required by the package at hand.
Sure, it is a bug if a stable packages depends on unstable! File a bug if you see such things!
But i guess the failure is somewhere in your /etc/portage folder... Can you please post your keywords, use and unmask files? -the archtesters don't know about these ;-)

Everyone is welcome to volunteer with archtesting!
Please read http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Arch_testing_guide that will explain the process. If someone would do nasty things intentionally, he/she would get banned quite quickly!

Cheers

Thanks, that is a start...
Now we need to know which problems you have with which command and which box (referenced to the portage files already posted).

I only looked at that snippet so far:

----edit2, scratch the previous statement after some more investigation--------------
See the progress of that bug here https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=530652 - that will solve this blocker with stabilizing a newer libclc!

...more archtesters would mean faster progress...
----end edit

We just have to live with the fact the a newer version can require newer dependencies and sometimes portage just prevents us from doing stuff that would break things. On the other hand we are always a bit behind and more hands would certainly help.

btw: See here for an explanation of the general perl-update mess.

--edit: libclc actually has a max version mentioned
--edit2: looked deeper and searched bugzilla....

and once again ...

any update (-DuNav or -Duav, etc)

I decided to stop looking for anwsers online every time i get this type of problem. I will just use this topic to pollute the forum the same way i get the system polluted.

I do not want multlib everywhere. Just a specific package that i may want with it, so i am quite thankful the upstream for these changes.

Code:
 # emerge -uav world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Gentoo is so dynamic that it requires you to follow it closely.

The devs are constantly evolving everything and they are succeeding in making Gentoo the most flexible distro of them all, yet it is still not too complex that only a god could administer it.

That's the problem: If you want no issues, go with another distro but you won't be bleeding-edge and won't have as many choices/freedoms.

For the record, I too am constantly trying to fix my broken neglected installs, but I never begrudge the devs because I understand what their challenges and goals are.

@ Progman3K
I do follow it closely. since i subscribe lists and feeds as well as ebuilds updates. Have several computers with it and my servers run gentoo. On top i run my own bin hosts. Probably been using it for longer than you so thank you for the lecture.

The only issues i have are dev caused. Everything else i fix it. If i want bleeding edge i will go "~*arch*" .

I have also tried/used over 12 other distros. Perhaps you have some news for me ?

How does your answer help anything in regards to my problem/topic/post ?

There is no need to be so passive aggressive ... Things will break in gentoo as better ways are found todo what was previously done (ie multilib) or annoyances is upstream forcing rebuilds (abi etc . re perl)...
Gentoo isn't like a binary distro where the distro dev's make sure everything "just works (tm)" Gentoo provides you with a recipe, if you decide to mix thing differently you can sometimes end up in a mess BUT the gentoo dev's and users are always around to unpick the mess

My default emerge command is:

emerge --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y @world --ask --verbose --tree

every now and again when (and that is a when) that breaks... (most recently due to perl, just before that due to the asshat decision over libav...) I start folding it back

1) only do SYSTEM:
emerge --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y @system --ask --verbose --tree

2) do WORLD, but not deep
emerge --update --newuse --with-bdeps=y @world --ask --verbose --tree

3) do WORLD but not deep or newuse
emerge --update --with-bdeps=y @world --ask --verbose --tree

slowly as the cookie cutter update command is pulled back, more and more applications are dropped from the list and more and more are permitted to progress.

ONCE the issue has been isolated a bit more, the cruft flooding the screen starts becoming more manageable and a careful read can soon decipher what is required.

One final thing... mixing arch and ~arch is asking for trouble... I started with just an arch box (good old P4) then went a bit "adventourous" with selectively unmasking but bam.. soo many breakages... I finally just went ~arch and deal with the testing instead of the bad compatibility due to selective unmasking

Thanks Naid but i also run some of those suggestions periodically. Some are daily, others weekly and i am still stuck.
I did find one solution for the conflicts but it still forces me to rebuild lots of packages with "true multilib" support. Also found a solution to that.

In the past we were able to select by use flag which package we would want with multilib support. In my case i do not want all that are requesting the change to go multilib since i only need a few.
To set the system as no-multilib was thought but eventually would case other problems and it would messy to reverse it.

note: i do not run unstable packages unless i am forced to by dependencies. My systems are "arch" only and not ~arch.
