Greetings all. Here is my situation.

My computer had two video cards, Nvidia, and identical. I has X configured such that the two monitors showed one desktop. I may not be using exactly correct terminology there, but I'll post my old xorg.conf below so you can sort out what I say and what is real.

I'm running kernel 3.18.5.

One Nvidia card died and I replaced it with a Radeon card.

output of 'lspci' below:

Now I'm trying to get the two of them to work together as my 2 Nvidia cards did.

If I run 'startx' with no xorg.conf the Radeon card will display, but I get nothing from the Nvidia card.

I've taken my old xorg.conf and attempted some tweaking. I can, when running 'startx' with the tweeked xorg.conf, get the Nvidia card to display, but I'm getting nothing on the Radeon card.

On a related note, is there a GUI program for Radeon that allows you to change settings and such? Nvidia has the nvidia-settings ebuild. Anything similar for Readon I should install?

Anyhows, that's what I'm looking to get working. Below I will post my old xorg.conf and also the X log.

Thank you very much.

And, wasn't there in the past a program you could run from the command line that would configure X? I recall using it but can find no trace of it now. I know Nvidia has such a thing, but I don't expect it to work with cards from other venders, tho I could be wrong.... Next time I boot the system maybe I'll take a shoot at that to see what happens. Probably explosions knowing my luck. *ha*

xorg.conf that worked with 2 Nvidia cards:

If you want to use 2 videocards you need 2 driver for them

Quote:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Pitcairn PRO [Radeon HD 7850]
02:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Cape Verde/Pitcairn HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 7700/7800 Series]
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G96 [GeForce 9400 GT] (rev a1)

So you have 2 VGAs but in xorg.conf you want use Driver "nvidia" for ati device 02:00.0

Quote:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BoardName "GeForce 9400 GT"
BusID "PCI:2:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Device1"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BoardName "GeForce 9400 GT"
BusID "PCI:3:0:0"
EndSection

Use the nvidia driver for a radeon card?

That sounds odd....

I'll try anything twice however. I'll see what happens.

Ah, I see. I was confused about that.

Well I changed "nvidia" to "radeon" for the Radeon card but that didn't work.

I'm pretty sure that change must be made, but there is something else that has to happen. I don't know what that something else is.

Did you installed ati-drivers or xf86-video-ati ???

Code:
emerge ati-driver -a

What VIDEO_CARDS in make.conf ??

you need reinstall mesa with radeon videocard support

Code:
emerge mesa -a

xf86-video-ati is installed.

for VIDEO_CARDS I did add "radeon"

as for mesa, I'll need to check on that. I did a world update with new flags enabled but maybe that didn't catch it.

Also, the new card will work with X. It just will not work so far with displaying X via both monitors at once.

I'll double check all this and post when I have answers.

First, mesa has been emerged with the radeon flag.

Second, I had the xf86-video-ati drivers installed and the radeon card would work when running startx with no xorg.conf.

Then I tried the ati-driver package and that hosed it. Now the radeon card will not work at all, xorg.conf or no xorg.conf. Looks like that was a bad idea.

My current xorg.conf looks like this.

Are you sure that these two brands will work together in your use case szenario?

what are your plans?

Maybe i have overread it but what is your setup?

How many screens? and such?

Personally I think it wont work and therefore I want to ask you for your use case szenario?

maybe you run two different x-server sessions and do not intend to use one x-server for several screens on different gpu manufacturers.

Summary: Are you sure that your hardware and your intended use case is technically possible?

afaik tvinview is a nvidia only thing.

The TwinView feature is only supported on NVIDIA GPUs that support dual-display functionality, s

so you need to remove tvinview from your xorg-conf and find some workaround,
2 nvidia cards + tvinview xorg conf okay !!

So, nvidia does not support XRandR yet. What they did up to this point is use their own technology called TwinView

arch linux claims xrandr is broken so you are in bad luck or go back to a driver which maybe do not work at all, somehow 300 nvidia driver ... should work afaik with xrandr

Looks like that was a bad

Are you using fglrx driver???

Just try to turn off Xinerama and use TwinView mode.

no offense but afaik waht the pages tell above,

tvinview is nvidia only. so i do not get the point why he should use tvinview with fglrx. the xorg.conf he provided already states that he has set it up like that and it is not working.

and only xrandr could work.

Interesting idea, i would try it too. But no garancy that two VGA of each other vendor should work together.

It's just interesting thing.

for binary drivers no.

for open source things yes when the binary blob allows it, thats why newer nividia drivers suddenly do not support well xrandr, according to archlinux. i just wonder why ... :)

Greetings. Thanks for your responses and help.

I had to walk away for a few days in order to avoid frustration. :) I've tried your suggestions and still have not be able to get this to work. At this point I've decided the smart thing to do is simply remove the Radeon card and go back to Nvidia. I've got some new video cards on the way and I'll see what happens.

While I never got this to work I did learn a few things.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I really appreciate it.

Mixing the non free drivers won't work clean either. (Not to mention OpenGL/GLX)

If you would use noveau and radeon, it will work, but I suggest getting two Cards from the same brand.

Bye

I had to give up on the radeon card. It was beyond my patience. :)

Dropped in 2 new Nvidia based cards.

Plugging in 2 new monitors.

Booted gentoo.

Ran nvidia-xconfig at the command line.

Ran startx.

Everything is perfect. Done and done.

Thank you for your help with the radeon card problem.

What's really funny, Window 7 is having problems with the new hardware. Linux works great. And "they" say Linux is hard to use...? *ha*
