I messed up my computer after merging a configuration file with dispatch-conf. I did a big no no and updated a configuration file (I don't even know which ones I updated, so I don't know what needs to be fixed) with out checking into what I was doing. The result was that when I restarted my computer the Plymouth splash screen just sat there not doing anything. So, I hit alt-f2 to bring tty1 and logged in as root. I typed in startx and it failed to start KDE. I have had this problem with kdm since I first installed Gentoo on this computer. See my past post: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1005612-highlight-.html and this one also: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1007330-highlight-.html.

I decided to try and remove Plymouth so I followed the Plymouth wiki page and reset the configuration files opposite to how they were before I installed Plymouth. I then unmerged plymouth and did a "emerge --sync". Now I can boot into KDE, but I have to select the recovery mode option from GRUB2. If I don't then plymouth splash comes up and that is all that happens. Even if I hit alt-f2, nothing happens. The only thing that I know to do is to do a hard shutdown. What can I do to fix this?

So when you use the recovery option means your preset boot entry of grub2 is already broken.

Maybe first try to fix that first. Build a proper kernel, emerge the related gpu driver for X and than go on??

Many issues are solved by that.

I have no idea what Plymouth is except it is in the south coast of Devon, England

Now I can boot into KDE, but I have to select the recovery mode option from GRUB2.

Do you mean that i should just rebuild my kernel as I had it before I did those updates?

Plymouth is just a program that gives a nice picture instead of the text that comes up during boot. https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Plymouth

Okayl, I figured out the problem. When I did an
Code:
emerge --newuse --update --deep @world
, it said that there were a couple of configuration files that needed to be updated. After carefully doing this, I found that I had changed
Code:
rc_parallel="NO"
to say yes, which can potentially cause a boot hangup. After that was fixed I rebooted and everything is working fine.

Thanks for all your help.
