Hi, when I switched over from Arch I was previously using their packages which provided KDE Frameworks 5 and Plasma 5. I've been using Gentoo stable amd64 (and it has been very stable and excellent) but am considering whether or not to try to upgrade using the kde overlay.

Has anyone done this (especially kde plasma 5) and if so how is it working for you as far as being able to build with portage and layman? Which packages and versions are available and functional right now? I would check the git.overlay web interface but apparently that is down and has been for some time unfortunately.

I do see these pages:

http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE/Overlay/Frameworks_5
http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:KDE/Frameworks/Plasma_5
http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE/Overlay

But was unsure if they reflect the latest status for the fast moving KDE releases, especially Plasma. I also checked the forum and didn't find much other than some having some issues with others hinting that they were at least able to run it.

This is my production system and things are rock solid now so I don't want to mess around with trying to upgrade if say the ebuilds won't even build at this point or reasonably complete support does not exist in the overlay. Thanks for any feedback or advice you can give. :)

I have only installed kf5 on test systems, but plasma-5.2 looks to be in very good shape. Currently only available via live ebuilds, you might want to wait a few days until someone has packaged plasma 5.1.95.

I'm really on the verge of going production with plasma-5.2, though that would mean a mixture of lots of :4 and few :5 kde-applications. Only a new kde-applications-15.04 release will bring more ported applications.

Thanks genstorm for the information. :) I see the Plasma 5.2 release is due about Jan 27, 2015 so that is coming up. I guess I will probably wait for that and see what feedback I can find about it before switching. The thing is my Gentoo stable KDE install is really the most smooth and stable KDE I can ever remember in using KDE. It's even working great with Nouveau and a dual display (although desktop effects are off due to rare glitches). I've been very happy with it and don't want to lose that.

The error is in line 7712:
Code:
/var/tmp/portage/kde-plasma/plasma-workspace-5.1.95/work/plasma-workspace-5.1.95/runners/baloo/baloosearchrunner.cpp:32:23: fatal error: Baloo/Query: No such file or directory

What version of kde-plasma/baloo do you have installed? On my system with kde-plasma/baloo-5.5.95 plasma-workspace builds fine.

Btw. I have no clue why it is 5.5.95 instead of 5.1.95

According to config:

Found KF5Baloo: /usr/lib64/cmake/KF5Baloo/KF5BalooConfig.cmake (found version "5.1.2")

...which is much too old.

That would be the required version. Why it's 5.5.95, only upstream knows :)

don't know but i have this:
Code:
*  kde-plasma/baloo
      Latest version available: 5.1.9999
      Latest version installed: 5.1.9999

i merged @kde-framework-5.6 and @plasma-5.2

thanks SCT2010, it's like i made a mistak in unmasking steps.
here the v5.5.95

after i merge 'kde-plasma/baloo-5.5.95', the compile of plasma-5.2 finished without errors.
kf5/plasma5 work nice on my test box, however on virtualbox test, the desktop keep crashing until i disable the VBox 3D graphic acceleration.
