Dear All,
In the last months I tried several times to switch to the new KDE framework.
However, all my attempts based on the kde-overlay and the instructions here - http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:KDE/Frameworks - failed.
I won't bother you with a description of everything I have tried so far. Probably I don't see the woods for the trees anymore.
Now that all kde-framework packages seem to be in the official tree I wonder if the kde-overlay is still needed.
Could anybody here tell me with a few words what to do to switch to KDE-framework?
Many thanks

The guide was a good help. Many thanks.
My main failure was, to try some sort of "update" of KDE4.
I finally completely deinstalled KDE4 and could then install KF5 including plasma5.
Both runs quite stable and most of the programs I need are already available.

Well, that's not a user guide - that's simply the packaging status page of KDE team.
Naturally, when you try to install it side by side there will be blockers, and many existing KDE-4 packages require their USE-flags changed to remove those blockers, namely `-handbook minimal`. Of course, unmerging KDE-4 takes care of it as well, though most people will miss applications that haven't been ported to :5 yet. |

As long as your on this subject, I was under the impression that the KDE4/QT4 Apps would run under the KDE5 Framework and all be seamless.
Is this not the case?

I'm sorry, this bit of your statement made me think that KDE4 apps would not be able to run.
though most people will miss applications that haven't been ported to :5 yet.

This was my impression too. However, according to my experience it is not possible to install KDE4/QT4 Apps under the KDE5 Framework because they block each other.

That's right, but I was positively surprised that most apps I need are already available. The only app I really miss is digikam, but the porting seems almost finished.
Btw, does anybody know whether there is an ebuild to install the qt5 port of digikam from git.
Best regards,

Certainly it is possible, you just need to set the USE flags so there are no conflicts, part of what I wrote above. |

Oh I missed that part. I will try.
Thanks
