Does anybody what happened to the gnome-panel-3.8 that was in portage some time. I did not get any news about its removal but its not in the tree anymore.

Does anynody have any references to discussion etc. about why it was removed? The Fallback session does not work if gnome-panel is not there.

It was removed as part of the gnome2 removal.

That only says "<gnome-base/gnome-panel-3.8". Why was gnome-panel-3.8 removed? gnome-panel is still used in gnome-3 to support the fallback mode, which is a good approximation of gnome-2 days.

edit: between https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=376708 and https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=377202, they decided to remove the whole gnome-panel, without any explanation.

I'd say that XFCE is a better approximation of the Gnome2 days ;)

Folks: I use KDE myself...:)

Its not about me. Its about who I provide this env to. And those folks need gnome-3 with minimal disruption to gnome-2 habits.

That's funny. You can guess the whys of removing the fallback mode... So GNOME/SystemD OS are openly moving to that single option/*choice(?)* option. "No fall back mode because it hurts our shiny brand?!" or something.

I already secured a few gnome-2 ebuilds I use a few months ago. As things are and going... Big shit await those who did not secure their whereabouts?! (pun intended) Too funny.

devsk, maybe Cinnamon could be the answer? Haven't tried it in a long time so don't know what's the state. But it was Gnome3 and the panel stuff is independent of Gnome and paramount to the whole concept, so won't be removed or deprecated.

Tony0945, what's the current state of running Evolution with mate? Last time I checked there were major problems with the keyring and other things. And at work I just need Evo, so Mate was not an option.

I want the minimum maintenance headache and anything gnome-2 is backwards with respect to that principle. But I can't ignore people's concern with gnome shell and having to learn a new desktop paradigm. So, fallback mode seems to be a good supported compromise. May be the folks, when exposed to gnome-3 in fallback mode, will try the new desktop paradigm and like it, and this whole issue goes away.

I don't run evolution or the keyring, so I can't tell. Keyring should be good. What's wrong with using Thunderbird?

I have almost 5GB of work emails from the last 4 years stored in evolution and don't want try migrating it. Starting fresh is not really an option since sometimes it proved useful to find some old information there.

Also I just like Evolution :)

szczerb ... which is why you should have chosen a proper mail standard, like microsoft word, from the outset as then you could have used any mail client that supported this standard :)

... but seriously, do these clients not simply use maildir/mbox, and what is it that needs "migrating"?

best ... khay

Nice one :)

Actually, current Evolution seems to use mbox. I remember some conversion/migration happened after 2.32.

Anyway I just like it as a mail client and XFCE is just fine for me as well. I was just curious if the issue between Mate and Evolution has been somehow resolved.

can't imagine anything wrong with evolution in MATE; I know people who just use evolution with awesome WM and so on successfully. Where is the existing bug report in case there are problems?

Something I found about the issue: http://forums.mate-desktop.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1684

On the second page two GCR bugs are linked. Seems like they were the real problems. So might give mate a try at some point.
