PostPosted: Sat Jan 03, 2015 5:50 pm    Post subject: Xorg stopped working after update - Reply with quote

Hallo all,

About a 2 weeks ago the Xserver stopped working after an update.
As a seasoned gentoo veteran (using it since 2004) this meant a few more updated config files...
Now this turns out to be a though one:

The right ALT key is not properly configured anymore....

I did so far:
check the X11 log files after all tries - zero / nada
reemerge all X11 input driver - zero / nada
reemerge all X11 and driver - zero / nada
check and recheck the xorg config files - I found some double configured things, removed them - without positiv results
using the xorg generated .conf yields the same error
wait for a week and update again - nope
reemerge all X11 and driver a- zero / nada
check the X11 log files after all tries - zero / nada

So I am out of ideas.....
Anyone with some suggestion?

Thank you and best regards...

_Jimmy_,

Welome to the forums.

Make friends with wgetpaste and use it to put /varl/log/Xorg.0.log onto a pastebin site.
Tell us the URL, so we can find the file.

_Jimmy_,

Code:
91.078] (EE) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

but why did it terminate?

What window manager do you use?
How do you start Xorg?

I really would like the whole log file on a pastebin site.

I just hit this bug;
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=534128
And to get X to start I had to;
Code:

eselect opengl set xorg-x11

To get gdm to start, with;
Code:

eselect opengl set nvidia

It freezes :/
There is no direct rendering and the module paths are messed up somehow, not really sure what is going on tbh

comprookie2000,

I suspect that bug too - so I wanted the whole log.
This case is unusual, in that the X server seems to have terminated normally, rather than just freezing.

Thanks guys for the quick reaction,

Here are the requested files...
M15x ~ # wgetpaste /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Your paste can be seen here: https://bpaste.net/show/21fd70a128ff

M15x ~ # wgetpaste .xinitrc
Your paste can be seen here: https://bpaste.net/show/5d65b57d4178

M15x ~ # eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] nvidia
[2] xorg-x11 *

It does not work with nvidia and xorg-x11 openGL

because that might be the next thing you ask - here are the config files...

M15x ~ # wgetpaste /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
10-evdev.conf 20-monitor.conf 30-keyboard.conf
M15x ~ # wgetpaste /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf
Your paste can be seen here: https://bpaste.net/show/dedc91d9d671
M15x ~ # wgetpaste /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-monitor.conf
Your paste can be seen here: https://bpaste.net/show/9c8060051aac
M15x ~ # wgetpaste /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/30-keyboard.conf
Your paste can be seen here: https://bpaste.net/show/7adb8779ea3f
M15x ~ #

Thanks for the effort and best regards -
good night

_Jimmy_,

This is why Xorg shuts domn.
Code:
[   386.605] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the GLX module; please check in your X
[   386.605] (EE) NVIDIA(0):     log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
[   386.605] (EE) NVIDIA(0):     server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module.  If
[   386.605] (EE) NVIDIA(0):     you continue to encounter problems, Please try
[   386.605] (EE) NVIDIA(0):     reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.

Thats because you have
Code:
# eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] nvidia
[2] xorg-x11 *

You need to make nvidia opengl active ....

Then you may hit the bug that comprookie2000 mentioned.

When you successfully switch OpenGL, this will change
Code:
[   386.340] (II) "glx" will be loaded. This was enabled by default and also specified in the config file.
[   386.340] (II) LoadModule: "glx"
[   386.342] (II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
[   386.351] (II) Module glx: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
The Vendor will not be X.Org Foundation.

Hi guys!

This evening I tried different combinations of xserver and nvidia driver versions with zero results.....

please note:
* opengl was always set to nvidia
* media-video/nvidia-settings higher than 331.20 are known not to work with my hardware - ( a try and error experience made earlier...)

here a rough transscript of this evening:

_Jimmy_,

The lines from the log that matter are
Code:
[   386.340] (II) LoadModule: "glx"
[   386.342] (II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
[   386.351] (II) Module glx: vendor="X.Org Foundation"

If the Module glx: vendor="X.Org Foundation" appears, and eselect is showing nvidia, then eselect is mistaken, as the wrong GLX driver is loading.

as commented in the Bug #534128, the order that x11 is looking for the glx driver is lib32 first (even though it shouldn't be). If you change the order of the lines in 20opengl.conf file (was incorrectly generated) so that it looks for the nvidia 64bit driver first (this also fixes, in reguards for ATI's driver too); it will fix the issue.

display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4

Thanks for the link. I'm surprised it's still unconfirmed, given the amount of activity and a clear issue with the conf. Still, at least we got to an explanation:

eselect-opengl is no longer handled by copying or symlinking libglx (and other libs) into place. The xorg side (like libglx.so) is handled by manipulating ModulePath in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20opengl.conf
so we know where to look, as you mentioned.

Hey guys!

I had some time this evening so I tried a few things .... without results....

here my notes....

Last login: Sun Jan 4 23:53:43 CET 2015 on tty1

check what opengl is selected

M15x ~ # eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] nvidia *
[2] xorg-x11
M15x ~ #

check the libglx

M15x ~ # ls -alh /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 51 4. Jan 23:27 /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so -> ../../../opengl/nvidia/extensions/libglx.so.331.113
M15x ~ # ls -alh /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 51 4. Jan 23:27 /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so -> ../../../opengl/nvidia/extensions/libglx.so.331.113

both path (32bit and 64bit) point to the same nvidia libglx.....

adding path to config

Section "Files"
ModulePath "/usr/lib32/opengl/nvidia"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
ModulePath "/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia"
EndSection

The path above I have checked and the exist, "/usr/lib32/xorg/modules" is not on my machine however

nope - no X

Here is the way to solve Your problem:

1. Edit your xorg.conf and comment out (or remove) all the lines of the following:
Code:
Section "Files"
....
....
EndSection

Even those containing FontPath settings. Therefore - there should not be any "Files" sections in any configs at /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ except possibly 20-opengl.conf

2. Reemerge xorg-server and its installed drivers with:
Code:
emerge -1av xorg-server `qlist -I x11-drivers`

3. Execute:
Code:
eselect opengl set nvidia

4. Start your kdm.

For further information about the matter - keep tracking bugzilla.

Hallo jam666, Hallo Guys!

As I said above that is a not soooo easy problem to solve....

Nethertheless I followed your instructions and - no. Does not work....no X

I post here what I did: https://bpaste.net/show/ab58c753644b

I might still be wrong - it could be that there is a tiny mistake I made...
Sad is that the update broke a nicely working system which could not be fixed despite years long experience and hours of patient configuring.

I got an other machine running Gentoo - but here I switched to Debian - therefore is is kind of solved.
After a couple of weeks I need that machine up and running.

Thank you all for your support.

_Jimmy_,

Your log at https://bpaste.net/show/8a6216868ee9 shows a normal Xorg startup and shut down.
Code:
[  8344.507] (II) LoadModule: "glx"
[  8344.507] (II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
[  8344.517] (II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
shows that it even loaded the correct GLX module, which is the hard bit right now.

How did you start the X server and what did you expect it to do?
It looks like it found nothing to do and shut down normally.

It seems this bug hits nvidia and amd proprietary drivers, because on intel everything is OK. I managed to startx to working desktop in GNOME 3.12 this way:
Code:
# cp /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/extensions/libglx.so /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
# env-update && source /etc/profile

After reboot I successfully enter my desktop - no "Oops something has gone wrong!" message anymore.

Same problem here.

This command solves it:
cp /usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/extensions/libglx.so /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/

# equery belongs libglx.so
* Searching for libglx.so ...
x11-base/xorg-server-1.16.3-r1 (/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so)
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-346.35 (/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/extensions/libglx.so -> libglx.so.1)

I thought "eselect opengl set nvidia" should solve it, but it does not.
