1) I like rc-update. Will that still be present under systemd?

No, there's systemctl.

is there new version of udev being developed?

udev is part of systemd, that's why you can't install both packages at the same time.

This will eventually fail if for no other reason than Gentoo is

Really, for no other reason? So, how much GB is allocated to Gentoo on mirrors and how many GB do older versions of GNOME take of that? Any hard numbers or are you just trolling?

Edit: removed answer to other things already replied by genstorm. Sorry, didn't see that extra post. Except to mention that there is eudev for non-systemd systems.

Grue, there's also the thing of how long Gnome will keep the old versions of GNOME available to download. After upstream removes the old version of GNOME, having a ebuild for that old version becomes a pointless thing, since it will no longer work. Having the ebuild maintainers hunt for alternative sources to download a old release of a package is a waste of their time for little gain.

True, but that's not the end days for non-systemd setups as it kinda reads from the post I replied to. Sure, people who desperately want GNOME 3 will have to make some hard decisions. Or they won't care at all. Those that want an "old" GNOME experience, I guess that's GNOME 2, there's MATE, right?
