I recompiled the 3.14.8 kernel with some un related option set (GPT support) and now the virtual consoles don't work anymore.

The moment KMS is activated and the intel drivers are initialized (builtin), all FB is lost. There's just a blank screen in the name of FB.

X works as expected. Once I switch to the terminals, the X display persists (it's like a stuck screenshot, it's not really activated, just frozen). I can switch back to the real X again.

vga= also appears to fail. The only thing that gets the FB back is nomodeset or removing the Intel drivers completely.

3.8.5 has no problems with the same configuration as 3.14.8. 3.17.1 has the same problem.

Kernel 3.14 is known https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1000108.html for having some problems. If you'd like to compare, this http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=UdycAGjA is my latest 3.14 configuration.

Yeah thanks for the link.

The graphics section of yours and mine doesn't have much of a difference, except legacy fbdev support, which I did try to enable but with no go.

Waiting for the next reboot....

What's your output of lspci -k?
For comparison:
Code:
$ lspci -k
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
        Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 30aa
        Kernel driver in use: i915
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
        Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 30aa
In this case the
Code:
CONFIG_DRM_I915_FBDEV=y
is needed.

Without a line like
Quote:
Kernel driver in use:
you're obviously missing the correct driver.

No no, I just trimmed that line. I'm using i915.

Sorry, I've not rebooted yet.

3.17 kernel does not improve on this.

I guest it's time to file a bug.

Ok, this was a grub problem.

Did grub-install and the problem was gone.

However it still persists for the 3.17 kernel.
