Hi,

I am trying to install gnome on a newly built gentoo right after compiling the kernel and installing few base packages.

When I do "emerge gnome" it give me the below error. I have pasted the excerpt from the log and the full output is in the bpaste url.

Code:
emerge gnome

Quote:

Total: 12 packages (12 new), Size of downloads: 13,046 kB

* Error: circular dependencies:

(gnome-base/gnome-shell-3.12.2::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) depends on
(gnome-base/gnome-control-center-3.12.1-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) (runtime)
(gnome-extra/nm-applet-0.9.8.10-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) (buildtime)
(virtual/notification-daemon-0::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) (buildtime)
(gnome-base/gnome-shell-3.12.2::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) (runtime)

It might be possible to break this cycle
by applying the following change:
- virtual/notification-daemon-0 (Change USE: -gnome)

......
.........
...........

!!! Enabling --newuse and --update might solve this conflict.
!!! If not, it might help emerge to give a more specific suggestion.

The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:

To overcome this i added the below values in the "/etc/portage/package.use" and executed the below command, but still no luck and it gives me the "Circular dependency error" as pasted below.

Run
Code:
eselect profile list
which profile is active (marked with an asterisk)?
run
Code:
eselect news read
and read your news to get that nuisance to go away.
Try running
Code:
emerge -C udev  virtual/libgudev virtual/libudev virtual/udev
USE="systemd -udev" emerge -av --no-deps systemd virtual/libgudev virtual/libudev virtual/udev
report results

Thanks for the quick reply!!. It seems like I am one step closer.

This seems be removed the dependency for systemd & udev and i am left with the blocking on Upower, Please let me know how to fix this. Based on few suggestions, i tried removing the upower and only installed upower-pm-utils and vice versa, also tried to mask upower but no luck.

Quote:
[blocks B ] sys-power/upower ("sys-power/upower" is blocking sys-power/upower-pm-utils-0.9.23-r2)

Here is the full trace https://bpaste.net/show/88bcee1bd285

And i have the /default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/gnome selected.

Also why i am getting the below exception while i already have this in my package.use file?

Quote:

The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.use" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by gnome-extra/gnome-documents-3.12.1

# required by gnome-base/gnome-3.12.0[extras]
# required by gnome-base/gnome (argument)
=dev-libs/libgdata-0.14.3 gnome

Thank you!!

you may set the gnome useflag in /etc/make.conf
you may use ufed for that.

Hi.. Gnome USE flag is already set in my /etc/portage/make.conf, my problem is with the upower dependency with upower-pm-utils and this gnome USE flag issue with[/quote] libgdata.

add USE="-udev" in /etc/portage/make.conf
run
Code:
emerge -pv world | wgetpaste
emerge -pv world
post the url
expect to see an exception for a half dozen or so packages requiring use flag udev. put them in /etc/portage/package.use.

Hi..

I just did what you said and only had one package libusb-1.0.18 expecting for "udev" and added it in the package.use and reran the command. This time i got the below error.

Thanks for your time..

These commands executed successfully!

Running the emerge -pv world after executing your commands get me to the same Blockage error as i mentioned before.

I am not new to linux but new to Gentoo, i am switching from Redhat to Gentoo and having all these issues. Please bear with me

Thanks

add sys-fs/udev to /etc/portage/package.mask then
Code:
emerge -C udev
emerge -pvuND backtrack=300 world | wgetpaste

You can't install really udev and systemd at the same time since udev is now a part of systemd. Also running things like
Code:
USE= foo -bar emerge -v1 stuff
is only a temporary solution (these useflags are set just for this run of emerge).
You shouldn't do that except for trying out stuff.

Run emerge -C sys-fs/udev virtual/udev and afterwards emerge -v1 virtual/udev

If everythings fine the virtual should depend on systemd and stop sys-fs/udev into the dependency tree.

Thanks @DONAHUE,

After trying all the possibilities, I end up enabling the "gnome/systemd" profile which worked seamlessly and i was able to emerge the gnome package without any hassles.

Thanks all for all your help :)
