today my system wanted to upgrade perl to 5.16.3

unfortunately, I get this block:

Quote:
(dev-lang/perl-5.12.4-r1::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
<=dev-lang/perl-5.14[ithreads] required by (media-sound/logitechmediaserver-bin-7.7.3::squeezebox, installed)

Does anyone know if this is a real block or just requires an ebuild edit, ... or any advice?

replying to myself; from the logitechmediaserver-bin ebuild:

Code:
# Runtime dependencies.
#
# TODO: Currently doesn't support Perl 5.16 on amd64 because the
# binaries for that are not packaged in the Logitech release tarball.
# Perl dependency for amd64 could be relaxed when they include those
# (they include the binaries for 5.16/x32 so I think it's just an
# oversight for now.)

still replying to myself :)

I downloaded the tarball of the most recent beta of logitech 7.8.

It appears to work perfectly (and with perl 5.16) but it would nice
to have an ebuild to install it properly.

Unfortunately, the current ebuild is somewhat complex and I don't know enough
to see how to make the changes needed to get the beta intalled.

Please pardon the (mild) thread hijack, but it is related, and the right eyes are probably here...

After shopping around, I ordered a "Logitech UE Smart Radio" for my wife for Christmas. We've been thinking about it for several years, and this year our existing equipment went a little more downhill. (too far downhill, this time?)

In the process I noticed that the UE Smart Radio is not a Squeezebox, nor is it compatible. Digging further, I found that there are firmware updates to convert the UE Smart Radio into a Squeezebox and back again. Along the line I found that the Squeezebox has been discontinued, which is why I can't find them for under $250 on Amazon.

It appears that the UE Smart Radio has a different server, which can be used with its stock firmware, or I can go Squeezebox all the way.

Can anyone comment on this mess?
(I really am asking for opinions here, flames, even.)

yes, it's a shame the squeezebox line has been cancelled

thus far, logitech has kept mysqueezebox.com in operation (which is where the internet
radio channels are set up and maintained). Who knows if how long this will last?

I don't know anything about the UE radio and I wouldn't buy one.

Another option is to put squeezeslave or squeezelite on a computer or tablet you've got spare.
These emulate a squeezebox player pretty well in my experience.[/quote]

What I may not have said well is that Logitech provides an alternative firmware load for the UE Radio that will turn it into a Squeezebox. From what I can see, they support conversion in both directions. Seeing that was why I went ahead and bought it. For my part, I want something small and simple that my wife can have around the house - in multiple places - I like the sync feature. She somewhat distrusts streaming and rather prefers physical CDs, but I think the benefit of walking from room to room and having her selected music will win her over.

I've seen a little about Squeezebox emulation, and that might be something to fiddle with, with a Raspberry Pi or some such - later. For a start she'd like something in a simple package.

The UE is easily reverted to the squeezebox and physically seems/sounds exactly the same as the squeezebox radio. (I just bought one and own two other SBRs.) There is a UE bonus in that you get the rechargable battery with the UE whereas I paid ~ $25.00 for a battery for my original SBR. The battery is a nice feature and will run the radio for 4 to 6 hours at normal listening.

My reading is that perl 5.16 and the LMS software are not happy with AMD 64, but OK with 32 bit. I am presently at perl 5.12 and considering 5.14 just to get a later perl, even though 5.14 was not liked for a while.

As for logitech, I think they received a lot of negative feedback for the UE/cloud concept and responded with the revert capability, but who knows what they will do in the long run.

With regard to original post, I got lms and perl 5.16.3 to play along with a different approach, although this is on x32 as referred to in the logitechmediaserver-bin-7.7.3.ebuild notes.

I made a local overlay from the squeezebox repository overlay (logitechmediaserver-bin-7.7.3) and modified the ebuild as follows:
Code:
x86? ( <=dev-lang/perl-5.16.3[ithreads] )

I also copied the files directory and created the manifest.

After running eix-update I could install it from the local repository which then allowed me to upgrade perl without version conflicts.

I'm not sure if it was necessary but I then ran perl-cleaner --reallyall which rebuilt all perl modules.

I also adapted a systemd unit file from arch AUR with details from the lms init file, as the change to systemd prevents the old init script from executing. I'm not very familiar with systemd but this seems to work.
Code:
[Unit]
Description=Logitech Media Server Daemon
After=network.target

[Service]
User=logitechmediaserver
Group=logitechmediaserver
PIDFile=/var/run/logitechmediaserver.pid
WorkingDirectory=/opt/logitechmediaserver
ExecStart=/opt/logitechmediaserver/slimserver.pl \
        --prefsdir /etc/logitechmediaserver \
        --cachedir /var/lib/logitechmediaserver/cache \
        --logdir /var/log/logitechmediaserver

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

I put this file, logitechmediaserver.service, in /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants and then ran the following:
Code:
systemctl daemon-reload
systemctl enable logitechmediaserver
systemctl start logitechmediaserver

I was experiencing Perl 5.16.3 and logitechmediaserver 7.7.2 conflict.
After a while I gave up and decided to investigate and ended up in this thread.

I then realized that there was an official squeezebox overlay. So now I have 7.8.0 and everything is back to normal. So I thought I'd update this thread.

I just updated to LMS 7.8.0. Prior, 7.7.x was running on the machine. Now, when I start the daemon, it crashes immediately. Nothing goes into the log files. Any suggestions?
