Hello,

I tried to Google and search this forum for solutions, but no luck. I'm trying to install the latest 32-bit Gentoo on VMWare Workstation 10.0.3 with Gnome 3.x and systemd and after hours of compiling everything looks fine, but as soon as Gentoo boots, I get blank/black screen. I can see that resolution changes and after hitting some random keys,
cursor (black arrow) gets shown, but still no Gnome. If I ctrl + alt + F2, I can login and work in console without problems.

Here's a snapshot :

looks like X started but the DE has problems.
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/GNOME/Configuration
have you emerged gnome?
have you configured gnome session in /etc/env.d/90xsession as ' XSESSION="Gnome" ' and/or in /home/username/
are you trying to boot directly to gnome? (have you logged in before receiving the pictured screen? if so as root or a user? using gdm?)
what are does /var/log/Xorg.0.log contain?

I'm using systemd not openrc, do I have to set /etc/env.d/90xsession? Yes, I'm trying to boot directly into gnome and
not sure how to login in advance because I'm expecting gnome login screen to show (I guess gdm - not sure how it is called).

Here's my /var/log/Xorg.0.log :

As you can see I have two EE lines, not sure if they are causing trouble :

Code:

[    83.952] (EE) Failed to load module "modesetting" (module does not exist, 0)
[    86.096] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering

startx gives me this (I had to temporarily emerge some packages) : http://i59.tinypic.com/i57ok2.jpg

If I try this as root :
Code:

echo "exec gnome-session" > ~/.xinitrc
sed -i '1i\export XDG_MENU_PREFIX=gnome-' ~/.xinitrc
startx

...it gives me again - black screen (cursor working fine).

Hmmm, after further analysis, I think I finally found an error using journalctl -rb (marked with red) :

Code:

looks like x started without problem. gnome did not.
have you configured gnome session in /etc/env.d/90xsession as ' XSESSION="Gnome" ' ? I do and I am writing this from systemd and gnome3.
What does /etc/conf.d/xdm contain for DISPLAYMANAGER=" " ? I have xdm as I prefer to boot to a CLI and use startx to boot Gnome or startxfce4 for xfce4.. Booting straight to Gnome in systemd; suggest DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm" and run systemctl enable gdm.service .

Nope, still black screen.

Code:

gentoo-vm ~ # cat /etc/env.d/90xsession
XSESSION="Gnome"

Code:

gentoo-vm ~ # cat /etc/conf.d/xdm
# We always try and start X on a static VT. The various DMs normally default
# to using VT7. If you wish to use the xdm init script, then you should ensure
# that the VT checked is the same VT your DM wants to use. We do this check to
# ensure that you haven't accidentally configured something to run on the VT
# in your /etc/inittab file so that you don't get a dead keyboard.
CHECKVT=7

# What display manager do you use ?  [ xdm | gdm | kdm | gpe | entrance ]
# NOTE: If this is set in /etc/rc.conf, that setting will override this one.
DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm"

Code:

gentoo-vm ~ # systemctl status gdm.service
● gdm.service - GNOME Display Manager

Hmm, what is interesting, I have emerged app-emulation/vmware-tools-9.6.2-1744117 but I have VMWare Workstation 10.0.3 - not
sure if this is causing any trouble. Btw, Workstation still shows option "Install VMware tools..." in the VM menu.

I have emerged xf86-video-vmware, but do I have to emerge open-vm-tools as well?

Hmm, I think I found what might caused the problem - some kernel settings were missing. I have decided to compile
a brand new kernel according to the https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-961502.html and I can see
now that some new messages are shown (drm messages too), but unfortunately the boot process hangs with the error :

'switched to clocksource tsc'

It just stays that way and the cpu is around 60% all the time.

Is there a pre-defined kernel .config for vmware I can download from somewhere?

OK, I sorted it out. Multiple things were missing :

- kernel was miconfigured
- world was not updated (I wasn't aware how emerge and USE flags work)

I ended up installing XFCE and Slim login manager.
After two days of compiling, everything is working now!!!! Yaaayyy!

Marked as solved.
