i had the same problem here on ~x86_64. i don't know the proper fix, but meanwhile here's a clumsy workaround that does the trick if you don't care about the documentation (it doesn't affect guile itself): as you can see make install is failing in the doc subdirectory, so you can remove that directory from the Makefile and it builds and installs successfully. it's probably best to do it manually (get into /usr/portage/dev-scheme/guile and go ebuild guile-1.8.8-r1.ebuild unpack, then in another terminal cd into /var/tmp/portage/dev-scheme/guile-1.1.8-r1/work/guile-1.8.8 and go sed 's/doc //' -i Make* and then back in /usr/portage/dev-scheme/guile finish the process with ebuild *1.ebuild compile && ebuild *1.ebuild install) so that the error will show up every time you build guile, until it's fixed. or, if you're like me and couldn't care less, patch the ebuild so it does this from now on (i just put it in my local portage tree and will leave it there until -r2 or whatever)

I had same problem too, and solved it.
The problem is makeinfo command error in making documentation as simon_irl worte.

I get error message like this

guile-tut-1.8.texi:538: warning: command @print does not accept arguments
guile-tut-1.8.texi:543: warning: command @print does not accept arguments
guile-tut-1.8.texi:659: warning: command @print does not accept arguments
guile-tut-1.8.texi:660: warning: command @print does not accept arguments
guile-tut-1.8.texi:661: warning: command @print does not accept arguments
guile-tut-1.8.texi:449: raising the section level of @subsection which is too low
make[4]: *** [guile-tut-1.8.info] Error 1

this error tell that makeinfo command cannot accept @print arguments.
makeinfo command is in sys-apps/texinfo package.
on ~amd64, the version of sys-apps/texinfo is 5.1, but on amd64 it is 4.13-r2.
So I masked >=sys-apps/texinfo-5.1 , and downgrade texinfo to 4.13-r2.
I can emerge guile with texinfo-4.13-r2.

This doesn't work for me, have the same error output, and I am using texinfo-4.13-r2, funny stuff, this installed fine on another system, with guile 1.8.8-r1 and texinfo 4.13-r2. using exactly same make.conf file. and it fails. WTF?? only difference the failed one is using ati instead of NVidia.
