Alright,
I have x free going, except the screen is shiften up and left (so when i reach top borner, mouse appears at the bottom). I have all the manufacturers specs in xconfig (using dell 2001fp LCD) and i still can get the image centered. Funny thing is using xfcfg the image comes on centered. How can i shift the image over?

Also i bought a 360mhz cpu on ebay and when i popped it into the ultra, it never boots up. It beeps and scans drives and stuff, but never comes on. Is there anythign special that i ahve to do to get it working?

Dont know about your LCD question, but I did read somewhere that you had to move some jumpers(?) for different cpu's on the ultras. Its been a while since i looked into it though, so im not positive.

Yes, on U2, U60 at least, you have to change a jumper setting on the
mother board if you change cpu speeds. I believe that this is the case
for U5, U10 as well, but I don't have the documentation handy.

Just go to http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/ and start looking at the
documentation for your specific system.

There is no jumper setting for Ultra5/10 needed. Just make sure your board supports a CPU at that speed (older revisions of Ultra5/10 boards dont).

What type of system do you have?

Look for your board part number (near the UPA slot) and compare it with this page: http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Devices/System_Board/SYSBD_Ultra5_10.html

In regards to the monitor problem, I haven't tried this on an Ultra 5 but it works on a Blade 100, which has a very similar video card.

Basically the problem is that the ATI chipset the video uses was really built for PCs, and it's expecting certain values to be set by the computer's BIOS. But since we don't have this on SPARCs, it can cause problems.

We can however set this in the XF86Config by setting the Reference Clock. Some documentation about this option is available at http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/4.3.0/ati5.html#26 and another user's experiences are at https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=67790&sid=e2fa1c03fc1ed75c5db6216fd21fbf59

On the board: If your board doesn't support your CPU, you should
be able to find one that does for not very much. I found a spare (for U2)
on eBay, and the shipping was more than the amount I paid for the
board.

I haven't checked for U5 (since I don't have any), but I would expect a
similar situation. Just make sure to get the serial number information
first.

And, if you actually want to swap boards, it's worth downloading the
reference manual for U5 (free pdf download from the same handbook_pub
site) if you haven't done so yet.
