Hi
I am using gentoo linux on virtual machine and short of space in root partition, every time i need to clear some logs to free some space.Need your support to increase the size of root partition as I have lot of free space available in the system.
Will someone please guide me if it is possible through command line without any partition software?
Thanks & Regards,

sayub76,
Please post the output offor your virtual machine and tell which filesystems you have in use on which partitions.
It may be possible.
You can use Code: | eclean -d distfiles | to remove old downloaded files you no longer need. Its also worth removing the content of when emerge is not running. Both tend to grow without limit. The former with downloaded source files, the latter with failed emerges. _________________ Regards,

NeddySeagoon,
Thanks for reply.
fdisk -l command is not working on the system. Its gentoo not redhat, some commands are not supported in gentoo.
Is there any way to increase the size of root partition???

fdisk returns Code: | bash: fdisk: command not found | if run as user, try it as root or with sudo |

sayub76,
fdisk is a part of the gentoo stage3. It should be in /sbin. You will need to run it as root, since it wants raw access to your HDD.
We need to understand the layout of your data on disk, the filesystems you use and the virtual machine you use to determine if and how you can extend the root filesystem.
The answer is probably yes but te how will vary depending on your answers to the above. _________________ Regards,

I think you should add a new virtual disk for "distfiles" and for /var/tmp/portage. Then there is no need for expansion of root partition.
/sbin/fdisk belongs to sys-apps/util-linux. Run: emerge util-linux |

A better thread title is appreciated => virtual machine, increase root fs ...
Because virtual machines are a different issue.
as said, parted, gparted, or add a new virtual drive to a new mount point |
