Hi,

Had trouble with media-sound/grip-3.1.3-r3 not detecting CDs for a while and finally getting round to trouble shooting it.

I've two devices...

Code:

# ls -l /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Aug 20 18:10 /dev/cdrom -> sr0
# ls -l /dev/sr*
brw-rw----+ 1 root cdrom 11, 0 Aug 20 18:10 /dev/sr0
brw-rw----+ 1 root cdrom 11, 1 Aug 20 18:10 /dev/sr1

cdparannoia has trouble reading the disc...

Code:

   Unable to find any suitable command set from probe;
   drive probably not CDDA capable.
006: Could not read any data from drive

cdparanoia could not find a way to read audio from this drive.

I'm in the cdrom group (which is the group the /dev/sr* devices are in (see above output))...

Code:

$ groups
lp wheel cron audio cdrom video usb users plugdev vboxusers lpadmin portage

I've tried setting the Config > CD > CDRom device to /dev/cdrom then directly at the device /dev/sr0 and also tried the other drive (/dev/sr1) but Grip persistently tells me that there is "No Disc".

Any pointers/suggestions would be gratefully received.

It is very rare. Your --info is correct. You can try add the USE "lame" for if the cd is not original
I have not the solution. Sorry!

Didn't think there would be anything in emerge --info that was useful.

Adding USE="lame" won't do anything since thats an enconder for after the WAV files have been ripped to convert to mp3, aside from which its not even an option for the current (and only) ebuild for grip...

Code:

$ eix grip
[I] media-sound/grip
     Available versions:  3.3.1-r3 {nls vorbis}
     Installed versions:  3.3.1-r3(06:32:56 08/27/13)(nls vorbis)
     Homepage:            http://sourceforge.net/projects/grip/
     Description:         GTK+ based Audio CD Player/Ripper

This problem is at a higher level way before an encode is needed because its that the disc itself isn't detected (polled) by Grip. One of the system tools (cdparanoia) fails to detect the disc, but another (cd-info) can detect it.

Very strange.

I should add that its not just this CD, but all that I've tried.

Quote:
cdparanoia -s -v /dev/sr0

What does it do without /dev/sr0 (in other words) "cdparanoia -s -v"

edit to add: or try "cdparanoia -vsQ"

Nothing with this...

cdparanoia could not find a way to read audio from this drive.

I tried both cdparanoia and cd-info with my sata dvd and they work as expected with a standard cd.

I do notice that you have "Optiarc DVD RW AD-5170A 1.13" which must be the original firmware with that drive
as I checked and they are up to 1.75 for the pata version (I assume you are using that from the model number).

I'm not recommending you update as that's a personal choice. Just mentioning it.

I'm making an assumption here.
that you have sata instead of old style ata (depreciated) drivers checked in the kernel.

I do have a question, did it work in the past, previous kernel version, previous cdparanoia, etc.

Not adverse to updating, although a quick search led me to Sony Optiarc drivers where there is only version 1.17. I found a modified 1.70b version, but struggled to find 1.75 (official or otherwise). Do you have a link please?

When I update my kernel I use 'make oldconfig' and tend to just answer 'N' to newer drivers (not all options though as some are new and useful, but my logic is that I've got things working with regards to drivers and haven't bought new hardware, so most new driver options will be irrelevant).

Its worked in the past no problem, but given my above approach to drivers I may well have disabled something. I'm going to try renabling 'Generic ATA support' and see what that dose, will update in an hour or so (got other things running that prevent a reboot immediately).

:oops: I wasn't paying attention to the number, the latest from sony's site is the 1.14 version,
they list a bunch of different models and I didn't double check before I said anything.

Then it's likely something got changed (driver or config) or there's a problem with that particular kernel version.

Yes, tending towards that conclusion myself.

I've had some problems with udev (see my post in this thread) and rebooted into an older Gentoo install (on a different HDD) that has =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.10.9 and could rip from there.

I have thought that the uevents hanging may be down to the fact that I left the CD in the drive :oops: but that wasn't the case unfortunately.

I'll work through the kernel options once I can reboot back into my main install, thanks for your assistance.
