Hi,

I wonder if you would consider installing tapatalk on this forum. http://tapatalk.com. It's a forum reader for Android, and supposedly takes 15 minutes to install.

The forum is not very usable from an android phone, would like to see it support tapatalk.

Thanks.

I think it would take more than 15 minutes to install... Look at the bottom of Gentoo forums pages and you'll see why...

Ya, I suppose it would be a hassle to upgrade to phpbb3.

Well I guess all I can do is say, "Please?" and hope something happens.

I would add my voice to this request as well. As a longtime Gentoo user who exclusively accesses the forums from my PC, it would be very helpful to be able to check in on the forum from time to time, from an Android phone or tablet, using Tapatalk. It's really much easier than using a browser on the Android device.

Thanks..

Yeah, probably it's the most that can be done, I know when I was trying to migrate my phpbb2 to phpbb3 I just gave up...

So do Gentoo site admins get around to reading this section? Not trying to be a pest, but it would be nice to have some sort of official word.

NeddySeagoon,

Glad to hear it, and I'll stop pestering you. But if you're looking for an early adoption group, ping me please! I'll be a guinea pig.

Bad news, phbBB 3 would be nice. I hope you have enough time/man-power soon.

Is it that Gentoo has modified the old version that much, or does the migration between the two suck that bad, or what?

It's mostly the modifications, coupled with the fact that the developers that did the modifications (most of 'em anyway) are no longer here. It's a big task.

I know almost nobody does this, but you can put most of those files into source code control. Check the stock product in as revision 1, then use svn/git/whatever to manage the changes. That way, you can see absolutely every detail that was changed in terms of css, php, whatever since you got the product. You may or may not be able to migrate those changes to a new version, but you can be sure you covered everything.

Likewise the database, if you don't get a script, you can export the structure to a script, add some base data and then put that in source control.

I think you may be onto something there. What is this "source code control" of which you speak?

Technically speaking, just downloading the original source code and diffing it will do the same thing...
... it's still a mess to port all the changes to phpbb3.

oh wow....

https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=1800395&start=15

http://www.intelligentexploit.com/view-details.html?id=7671

i have been penciling in ideas on my local black board of things to do to the phpbb wiki. as of right now im crafting a command to check apache for -D PHP5 & insert if not found. (as that impacts several lamp wiki articles i wrote) i seen a post of phpbb getting hacked by poorly written mods and shells inserted and servers rooted. i didn't even realize this was phpbb2.

what are these "modifications" and why not scorched earth policy, (regarding the mods, not the post hoarding) and worry about migrating the modifications later on?

Is this a genuine offer to make your proprietary system compatible with the code and the FOSS ethics these forums are built on?

Or is it just automated/cold-call sales spam bumping a year old thread that turned up in some google search?

This is probably partly my fault i did a tweet saying I wish the forums supported tapatalk. He then messaged me but registered here before I had a chance to reply and say if they wanted it and it was working they would have already done it
