Hello,

I have a system here that hasn't been updated in a while due to Gnome 3 going stable and a lack of time.
Since MATE is a very nice replacement for Gnome 2 (yeah, kinda obvious), I'd like to install this.
The question is, however, how would I best avoid a huge mess?

I think in order to be a bit more up to date, emerge --update system is a good idea.
Then I'd need to get rid of all Gnome stuff, and I'm not sure how to do that, but I might find an answer in some old thread [OK, found that one]. Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.

I have just done "emerge -c gnome-light && emerge mate slim". (but i remember slim stopped me as you must pass its package/slim form as some other slim exist)
I just kept my gnome mask to make sure i could still use a few gnome applications without the systemd crap been pull.
For now i have a few unused gnome applications i don't really care as they will get depclean if i run it one day :)

The biggest problem was slim (biggest doesn't mean it's a big one)

OK, a new problem's come up.
I have removed all gnome packages from my world file, put -gnome in make.conf and selected the pure desktop profile instead of desktop/gnome. Yet when I try to update my world gnome stuff is in the list of stuff to be updated and causes problems.
Any idea how to find out why all that gnome-stuff is still there?

well, to find out what is pulling something in, you could add the "-t" option to your emerge line; to have portage display the list in a tree fashion. Personally I never did like that way myself, as I always find it gets confusing easily enough. I perfer to use "equery d" instead to see what depends on that package, just use it on the gnome packages that are being brought in.

I have a mate/desktop profile system, and there are still some 25 gnome-related ebuilds on the system.
Code:

equery l "*" |grep -i gnome
app-text/gnome-doc-utils-0.20.10-r1
gnome-base/dconf-0.20.0
gnome-base/gconf-3.2.6-r3
gnome-base/gnome-common-3.12.0
gnome-base/gnome-keyring-3.12.2-r1
gnome-base/gsettings-desktop-schemas-3.12.2
gnome-base/gvfs-1.20.2
gnome-base/libglade-2.6.4-r2
gnome-base/libgnome-keyring-3.12.0
gnome-base/libgnomecanvas-2.30.3-r1
gnome-base/libgtop-2.30.0
gnome-base/librsvg-2.40.2-r1
gnome-extra/gucharmap-3.0.1-r200
gnome-extra/gucharmap-3.12.1
gnome-extra/libgsf-1.14.30
gnome-extra/nm-applet-0.9.8.10-r1
gnome-extra/polkit-gnome-0.105
gnome-extra/yelp-3.12.0
gnome-extra/yelp-xsl-3.12.0
net-libs/libsoup-gnome-2.46.0
net-wireless/gnome-bluetooth-3.12.0
x11-libs/gnome-pty-helper-0.36.3
x11-themes/gnome-icon-theme-3.12.0
x11-themes/gnome-icon-theme-symbolic-3.12.0
x11-themes/gnome-themes-standard-3.12.0

Then you can run equery d on each on them to see what pulls them in
Code:

equery d gnome-doc-utils
 * These packages depend on gnome-doc-utils:
net-misc/vinagre-2.30.3 (app-text/gnome-doc-utils)
sys-block/gparted-0.19.0 (app-text/gnome-doc-utils)

Thanks, got it.

Even though I put -gnome into make.conf, gksu still had the gnome flag enabled and pulled in some other gnome stuff. Next time I'll specify --newuse. Always thought it was a bit redundant, since updated packages will use the new flags anyway. :D
