A major difference from ath9k is that there's now a firmware and that's why we had to implement a new driver.

So I'm thinking that the ath9k would be a good option without worrying about firmware. I'll need to see if this covers ac technology, though.

alienjon ... it doesn't, its a different chipset. The only 802.11ac cards from Atheros are QCA988x, ath9k supports the AR900x chipset, and these are 802.11n.

The issue with the older adapter did come up, though I realized that the wpa_supplicant log line was actually only enabled for the newer adapter... Here's the error, but I won't have the log output until it happens again (which may be 5 seconds after posting this or 5 days after, I really can't tell...) Note the timestamps for each line. The first few warnings appeared a little while after booting (and in checking a more recent dmesg output it seems to have happened later as well). When the adapter fails the last set of lines repeat ad infinitum with the very last line interspersed here and there. I've found the unplugging and replugging the adapter back in will solve the issue, but odd that it happens in the first place (and kind of a pain to keep having to do this...)

alienjon ...

I'm wondering if this isn't a variant of this bug. The error reported is different but the symptoms seem similar. ALso, this thread from Feb 2012 suggests some other long standing issue.
