Hello

I am trying to install via minimal cd boot.
Apparently I must run cmd

emerge --sync

The problem is this returns

Code:

>>>>Sync of repository 'gentoo' located in 'usr/portage'
!!!!getaddrinfo failed for rsync.gentoo.org : [Errno 111] Connection refused
>>>>starting rsync with rsync://rynsc.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage...
>>>>checking server with timestamp....
rsync: getaddrinfo: rsync.gentoo.org 873: System error
rsync error: error in socket 10 (code 10) at clientserver.c(122) [Receiver=3.0.9]
>>>>Retrying ...
!!!!Exhaused addresses for rsync.gentoo.org

However I skipped this part thinking perhaps I can ignore it.

Onto the next command I try

emerge genkernel

This command begins to download, but then I get the error at the bottom

Code:
>>>>Failed to emerge app-arch/cpio-2.11-r1, Log file:
>>>>'/var/tmp/portage/app-arch/cpio-2.11-r1/temp/build.log'

As this error seems like just a log file, I try the next cmd succeeding.

genkernel all

This returns

Code:
bash: genkernel: command not found

I am not a linux expert, but it seems genkernel is not installing at all.

This might sound silly, but are you online? Can you run this with success within your chroot?
Code:
ping -c 1 www.google.com

If not, you might want to check https://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=3 for help.

I did run ping and it worked.

Its interesting u said that too, because I actually install the minimal gentoo disk thinking it would be a more lightweight version from a performance point of view, but its actually lightweight as it requires the internet.

This could be one reason for the errors.

I actually didnt have net up until this point, for stage 3 tarball and portage I downloaded on USB, then mounted it and copied the files over.
However for this part, I could not find which files to download manually, so I had to setup the networking.

Either way, my box has internet.

Regards

boot the cd, mount the gentoo partitions, run
Code:
ls -lR /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage | wgetpaste
post the url returned; snapshot extraction may have missed; this should check it
also
Code:
cat /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf
should yield the same as
Code:
cat /etc/resolv.conf

Hello

I have another problem, I cannot type the | symbol within the CLI.
My keyboard is purchased from the US, Next to the Z key the pipe is not their...

I have tried the alternative method of holding ALT + 179, but this brings up a white filled square box.
Ive also tried all keys on my keyboard via Shift +, Shift + Alt +, Shift + Ctrl +, Shift + Ctrl + Alt +...

Do you know how to get this up?

The pipe key isn't next to the z key on a us keyboard. It is next to the ] key.

on my wired keyboards between + and backspace on the numbers row right end
wireless keyboards, as tryn said, on right end of the qwerty row

Code:
ls -lR /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage > afile
wgetpaste afile
should be a less elegant substitute

Ok this less elegant solution seemed to have functioned.

I now have a file called afile within my /mnt/gentoo directory - Filled with loads of text.

I also ran cmds

cat /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf
cat /etc/resolv.conf

Both of these return

#Generated by dhcpcd
# /etc/resolv.conf.head can replace this line
# /etc/resolv.conf.tail can replace this line

Do you want me to save this afile file to a usb and post it here?

Regards

Code:
wgetpaste afile
should have returned a url to an internet pastebin with afile uploaded to it
if you have rebooted afile will have vanished,
if so
boot the install media, rerun
Code:
ls -lR /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage > afile
wgetpaste afile
post the url retuned. If no url
Code:
nano afile
look for output like:
