What needs for starting record music with Ardour?

Hi,

I would like to start recording music with Ardour -
I am really starting so hope the following issues are relevant to this forum:

1. After installing Ardour - when I am trying to open new session I am getting this error:

Regarding the problem to open new session with Ardour -
I found in google that maybe JACK server is missing.
I did not know that I need it - I need to install Jack or it is included in Ardour?
If yes - please let me know what package to install?

Hello,

What is you aim for "recording"? Is it as a multi-track audio workstation, or a simple audio recorder?

Audacity is simplier as simple recorder and editor.

I am talking about a multi-track audio workstation.
As far as I can see, according to the user manual 'Ardour uses the JACK Audio Connection Kit' -
Does it mean that I must install this package: media-sound/jack-audio-connection-kit,
in order to open new session?

yeah, you will need to install jack, but also a tool to configure and start it. I would recommend qjackctl.

There's a lot to be said about configuring a Linux system for audio work.

As for the microphone, it really depends on its intended use.
A Shure SM57 or SM58 is affordable, almost indestructible, a standard for some common applications (live vocals, close mic'ing of snare drum and guitar amp), and pretty good for a wide range of other ones, so I'd say it's a good mic to have anyway.
BTW, you can unscrew the grill from the SM58 and have almost exactly a SM57 (they are identical except for the external grill).
The Behringer C-2's are ridiculously cheap condenser mics that are really good for their price (while the Behringer C-3 is horrible).
Neither of them is the perfect mic for recording acoustic guitars (for example) but they're a reasonably cheap start that will get a lot of ground covered.

Let me know if you have any questions (I own gentoostudio.org). If you're not married to your current setup, I highly recommend you re-install Gentoo using Gentoo Studio's stage 4 installation method.

A stage 3 is a basic system install. You have to proceed to install anything you want after that - X, WM/DE, and any and all programs. A stage 4 is a "ready to go" installation with certain packages pre-installed. In the case of Gentoo Studio, the stage 4 tarball contains a plethora of audio programs and is ready to start making music after setup. This is useful for users who don't want to deal with possible installation issues, as I have resolved them in the tarball.
