elfutils: cannot run test program while cross compiling

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

elfutils: cannot run test program while cross compiling

(and other packages)

Code: Select all

configure: error: cannot run test program while cross compiling
... which makes sense, obviously, but does anyone have any suggestions how to proceed here?

Is it a case of this particular ebuild needing a bit of work before being ready for cross compiles? I just assumed something as core as elfutils would one of the more commonly cross compiled packages, perhaps I've missed something?

Are you using cross emerge? Maybe set -test USE flag. Post emerge --info ?

Yes, the emerge command I'm using is i486-pc-linux-gnu-emerge. One of my first errors was using straight emerge to install baselayout (the first package I tried). I realised this mistake soon, and remerged it using the correct one, and I'm wondering if there's somehow something left behind. I've checked all of the ROOT, PORTAGE_CONFIGROOT, CBUILD AND CHOST env vars. Here's the emerge --info

Code: Select all

I noticed the 'test' USE flag, but I haven't tried it yet. When I looked at the ebuild, it seems to enable some post-build testing (the build is failing in the configure stage), rather than disable anything. In any case, I may be wrong, so I'll try this anyway when I get my prompt back and let you know how it goes.

Thanks!

The test USE flag usually controls running self tests of the package. Your problem is that a test program used to compute information before the build failed, so the answer it would have produced is not available. This is not related to USE=test, which russK was suggesting that you set to disabled. As I understand your post, it already is disabled.

As I suspected, thanks.

Anwyay, I blew away everything under $ROOT and started again. I think one my problems may have been that I was cross compiling using the default/linux/x86/13.0 profile (intentionally) instead of the embedded profile. I haven't been able to get any straight answers on whether this is wrong (I'm trying to cross compile, but it's not an 'embedded' system I'm trying to make) and I think the biggest barrier is that a lot of people seem to be thinking that Cross Compiling == Embedded.

I switched the make.profile to /usr/portage/profiles/embedded, and the problems with the failed tests went away, only encounter even more, some of which are already open threads here which I'll keep an eye on.
