No Man’s Sky: A Vast Game Crafted by Algorithms

I'm not a gamer, but this thing looks pretty cool (a shame about the platform).

I have a PS4 collecting dust right now... I'll definitely get this game.

I'm surprised there weren't more responses. I might look into a used PS4 if any are available.

Seriously. This game is a nerd's wet dream, and these forums are crawling with nerds.

Debuted in 2013, was a hit at 2014 E3. I just hope they can turn it into an actual product.

Looks like fun, sure. But we have no way of knowing if it's any fun yet. The two big reasons I'm even considering getting a ps4 this year is because Flower HD is already on it (and I'll get it free since I own the ps3 version), and Journey HD seems to be coming soon according to some leaks (ditto).

There's no way of knowing if anything is fun before trying it.

They don't seem like games. Flower looks like a demo of an engine, and Journey looks like a demo of game elements.

Journey's good. It's a simple game but very engrossing. Haven't tried flower.

Indeed, but in this case we don't really know how it is intended to play yet.

And yet, two of the best games I've played. An experience I've played several times, and would play again if I got a ps4.

++

It's hard to explain why those games are so good. Less of a game, and more of a nice experience.

From what I've seen, calling it an experience sounds more accurate than a game.

@arnvidr: The video of No Man's Sky shows some strong indications of how it is to be played. But again, that can be experienced when you try it. :P The video shows some standard gaming elements, so it seems like it will be part experience / part typical game. It appears to you could be an explorer, but also get yourself killed if you explore a hostile world. So if you go exploring with heavy arms, you might come out alive. It'll be interesting if they add other "realistic" elements like trade, etc. That could probably even be something added later.

Apparently this was released in 2016.

Did anyone end up buying or playing it?

It didn't live up to any of its promises.

I didn't play it, but it is legendarily for how bad it is. It didn't contain a quarter of what was promised.

It sounded overly ambitious. I wonder if there is a "what went wrong" write-up.

I did buy it, I spent $120 to get it on day 1 release.

It basically felt completely baron and empty, incomplete. there were a lot of planets but absolutely nothing on any of them. There were some space stations, with the same NPC in each one. 1,000's of spaceship designs and classes basically boiled down to three different ships that all functioned identically. They also claimed that everyone would be playing on the same online server like an MMO that just turned out to be a complete lie, I don't think the game ran online at all just locally but, they thought they could tell you it was just so big you never ran into anyone.

It felt like someone testing an engine. Ironically it turned out to be a pretty good representation of the universe, it's so big and vast there's fucking nothing there.

This is the perfect example of why you shouldn't buy into marketing hype, I feel ashamed as a 30 year old man I got sold like a sucker.

There is a clip of Shaun Murray being interviewed and the interviewer jokes "I have this idea that when people get to the center of the universe, you say they will discover something amazing but, when they get there the screen just fades to black. That would be hilarious!" Well, Shaun Murray also agrees that would be funny. Guess what happens when you get to the center? Yup, it just rolls credits. This is what I hear anyway, I just turned the game off after about an hour because I was bored.

Ouch. I'm sorry to hear it was that bad. Thanks for the feedback.

And yet infinitely more valuable than your reply. Seriously, I don't understand why you think that. I was curious if anyone tried it. Patches were released in August through October, so development at least seems somewhat ongoing.

Nope. It resets the game in another dimension and you can start all over again.

Master troll game.

Well the entire game fizzled out because what was promised and what was deliver was far from aligned NOR agreed by the backers. The entire thing is a big nothing
