Senator’s Thesis Turns Out to Be Remix of Others’ Works, Uncited

Quote:
WASHINGTON — Democrats were thrilled when John Walsh of Montana was appointed to the United States Senate in February. A decorated veteran of the Iraq war and former adjutant general of his state’s National Guard, Mr. Walsh offered the Democratic Party something it frequently lacks: a seasoned military man.

[...]

But one of the highest-profile credentials of Mr. Walsh’s 33-year military career appears to have been improperly attained. An examination of the final paper required for Mr. Walsh’s master’s degree from the United States Army War College indicates the senator appropriated at least a quarter of his thesis on American Middle East policy from other authors’ works, with no attribution.

And it happened 7 years ago, so it isn't as if it was a youthful indiscretion.

There were simmilar cases in Germany a year (?) ago.
The conclusions I came to were:
1) When you're studying bullshitology, plagiarism is just the way things go. Why? Because you're reading sources that have no application in the real world to create your own theories that won't have an application in the real world. Effectively, you're just voicing an opinion and add some quotes and references to other people's opinions to make it seem like this has anything to do with actual scientific research.
Quote:
In repeated instances, Mr. Walsh uses the language of others with no quotation marks, but footnotes the source from which the material came. In other cases, the passages appear in his paper with a word or two changed, but are otherwise identical to the authors’ language.

In other words: If he had reworded the source, like any 6th grader is able to do if he's willing to put the time into it, he would've been fine? Wow. Such science.
2) If you think the BA and MA Thesises of your average politician are of higher value, I have bad news for you.

You don't even have to do that. It shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the concept of a thesis or dissertation. It's not about pulling knowledge out of your ass; you have to demonstrate where it came from. You shouldn't be saying very much at all without attributing it to someone else or documenting it as hands-on, empirical experimentation.
