Hello friends,

I was trying to install gentoo from minimal install cd in Virtualbox, but I only got to this message when I tryid to boot>

OpenRC 0.11.8 is starting up Gentoo Linux (i686)

INFO rcu_shed detected stalls on CPUs/tasks:{} (detected by 0, t=6002 jiffies, g=17428, c=17427, q=5)

INFO Stall ended before state dump start

Any idea where is the problem?

I really like Gentoo!!!

What Virtual Machine are you using?
I have used Oracle Virtual Box and they have a pre-configured option when creating the Virtual Machine for Gentoo and Gentoo 64 bit?
Are you sure the Virtual Machine architecture matches the one of the *.iso you downloaded?

hi,

thanks for reply.

I`m using Oracle Virtualbox 4.1.18_Debian r78361.

I have set everything as it should be (the arch i`m using is x86 so in VIRTUALBOX i have set one processor unit). I`m using older laptop, therefore i suppose i don`t have virtualization support.

I have also tried to install Gentoo using LiveDvd. I did whole instalation, but eventually I got same error message. It started to boot but it halted with the same message. So i don`t know whether i have bug in Virtualbox or what`s wrong.

Thanks for any help!!!

I'm running the minimalx86 in VirtualBox from an Arch host and just after choosing the defualt keymap(41/US) I get the same issue as this thread

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-976264-highlight-rcushed.html

Seems he couldn't find a work around either? I've been trying my google-fu but no luck and this was the only other post in the forums with the same issue.

Everything for VB seems set up fine, it's worked with other guests, so I'm really curious to know what is going on...

There's a couple of threads on this subject hanging around the forums. It basically boils down to a weird interaction between something being done by the newer gentoo install disks and virtualbox running on a CPU that lacks VT-x or AMD-V.

Here's the virtualbox ticket. https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/12469

You can try an older install disk, or run your install from something like sysrescuecd, or any live cd really.

Well that's an interesting situation, I wonder if this bug will be fixed any time soon...

Anyway, I'm happy to download an older .iso if someone could point to a link with a version with linux 3.8.x :D As they are organised by date I'm not sure which ones have the 3.8 kernel

You can make a better guess knowing that 3.9 was introduced on 2013-04-29 and that it never got stable in Gentoo, we stabilized 3.10.7 instead on Wed Aug 21 12:11:35 2013 UTC. So, I think you would want to look for something in the first quarter or so of 2013.

Thank you, I'll go grab it now

This may seem a stupid question but, is this ok to load and install in VB?

Yes, if that is VirtualBox, I think so.

Hi Guys,

Sorry for rising the old thread from the dead, but I think that I'm having the issue described above.

I'm running VirtualBox 4.3.12 r93733 and trying to boot gentoo from install-x86-minimal-20140415.iso.

I'm aware of the bug, but I'm running VirtualBox on Intel Core i5-2400 CPU which I believe provides support for virtualization? (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Is my CPU the problem here?

Thanks in advance!

Even if your processor supports virtualization, it also needs to be supported by your motherboard, and enabled in BIOS. I'd check in BIOS for a likely looking checkbox or toggle.
