A few days ago skype update caught me off guard and as a consequence i lost sound for all media sound applications.
Today i was able to get back some applications to work with alsa but most still fail.

Current working apps:
Mplayer/2
vlc

Non working apps:
skype
any browser with flash macromedia
moc player complains about (Unsupported sample size which might be some other problem)
audacious outputs (ALSA error: snd_mixer_find_selem failed) when selecting alsa and keeping SDL by default which does not work.
ekiga detects alsa and the microphone works during test but no other positive sound result comes out of it.
minitube has no sound


I was following this tutorial https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-789181-highlight-pulseaudio.html but without success and right now it might be better to start from zero.

System does not use gnome, kde, xfce apps. Only gtk/qt and fluxbox.

Key question: are you under systemd ?

If not, do you know the basics of consolekit setup ?
If yes, (no personal experience, but) chances are any of pulse-access/audio group membership might interfere.

Does the most basic aplay call produce sound ?

The simplest would be to mask new version of skype and stay without pulseaudio. That's what I did, because once upon a time I've also tried to configure pulseaudio and only got big mess. I use only sawfish, so I don't have neither consolekit nor polkit, so to start all of that mess just because of newer version of Skype - nonsense.

Well, as you're not under systemd, being in audio group might be enough for pulseaudio to work without consolekit, but it might be quirky at times.

Did you check (perhaps by using alsamixer) if the device is not muted ?
You might also want to see with 'pactl list' if pulseaudio is picking the correct device (as it might be picking one, that has no speakers connected).

@ v_andal i have considered doing that and mask skype for all my systems since i did it for the netbook but until when ? It will be a matter of time until we will all have to move to a newer skype version.

...pulseaudio is being run by you (a normal user), right ?
If you run the daemon in the foreground with verbose output, does it print anything interesting ?

On one of my netbooks i installed skype with pulseaudio without modifying or changing anything around. Everything works with the difference that alsamixer pulls pulse as the default sound card and the hardware sound card as card 0. All sound works except skype mic.

Also fund that i have some issues with udev, gudev and systemd

'/lib/systemd/systemd-udevd' is a not a problem - upstream changed the name of the binary awhile ago.

Are you sure that only one user is running pulseadio ?
Without consolekit in place, instances run by different user will conflict.
(actually, if one of the users is root or more than one is in audio group, there stil might be a problem)

There is quite a big mess in my desktop system in regards to package dependencies most of them either in conflict or pulling systemd related packages.
The reason why systemd crap is keep surfacing is because of some gnome-base/* packages that some people like to say that just because it says gnome it does not mean it is gnome. I call it BS.

What was once one or two gnome-base packages turned out to go over 25 in the desktop which slowly lead to use flags changes ending up by pulling udisks support, gudev support, different verisons of udev and more gnome crap. Like CRAP wit the name gnome.

I have been cleaning 3 systems from gnome named packages but still have problems with the desktop.

One of the netbooks has full working sound for all apps but only outputs sound for skype. Skype cam and mic do not work.

The desktop is still going under heavy cleanup but i found that adding:

To .asoundrc for the user; will bring back the sound for the browser and a few more apps. However no changes for skype.
On the desktop skype cam works and uses the same driver as for the netbook. Mic does not work yet.

This tells me that pulse is taking over in a strange way since the netbook does not have .asoundrc settings and sound does work for most of it's applications.
The netbook also does not have pulseaudio group and or pulse-user group in /etc/group . There is no pulse* group of any kind.

As for the desktop:

In regard to installed packages; both the netbook and the desktop have the same *pulse* packages installed:

The above .asoundrc is pretty much breaking pulseaudio.

The default minimal for pulseaudio is:

(it's installed by alsa-plugins[pulseaudio] IIRC)

The way pulseaudio works (at least to my flawed understanding) is by taking exclusive control of the audio device, the one you're using makes random apps take it.
(btw, if you don't know the upstream of udev *is* systemd - it's the same tarball)
It's been working that way for me since well before before pulseaudio 1.0. (my /etc/groups greps about the same - I'm not under systemd)
(on unrelated note: a few packages in gnome-base/ aren't really gnome - chief example being gvfs)
Also, you did read 'man pulseaudio', right ?

Check which app is holding the soundcard while 'pactl' fails.

I have been rebuilding the system during the weekend and fix some desktop errors and a couple things got better. However skype sound is still not solved.

pactl list does not work in any of the systems when executed by root. works in both when executed by the user and pulse audio runs in the user account only for bother systems and not as deamon.

man pulseaudio does not seem to help much.

In the middle of all this i also found something strange that never happened to me before.
virtual/udev and sys-fs/udev force me to use the gudev flag regardless of having it as -gudev in make.conf or package.use .
If fact it overrides my settings even if i have -gudev in bother make.conf and package.use and does not even complain about the need for that flag as it simply overrides the setup and gets read to emerge */udev with gudev support.

I am out of ideas at the moment. At least both netbook and desktop should be having the same problems and they are not. For some reason i get sound on the netbook without any changes.

In the light of pactl output (I hope it was under my .asoundrc; also, that it was from the *not* working machine), what does 'paplay -v --raw /dev/urandom' output to the console ? Does it produce noise ?
What's not working in skype (input or output) ?

There's the thing, that pulseaudio volumes are put on top of the device ones, so you'll likely need to set the device ones to max (via - for example - alsamixer).

What I'd call a ham-fisted way of dealing with the problem, would be installing pavucontrol (note the gtkmm deps) and observing the streams there.

Hi, all. I have just run into this problem myself. I have been updating a very old system and finally got it back on its feet so decided to install skype which pulled pulseaudio, my sys configuration is very similar to yours Hex, at least in terms of sw config.

Anyway, I managed to get the audio working following the same guide you showed in the intial post but when I tinkering with things mostly related to utf encoding i restarted and my audio is borked.

Here is one thing I noticed. Just before getting it working, my alsamixer showed a my hw soundcard device in alsa mixer, but now all as user it is missing except for default. Meanwhile if i run alsamixer as root, I have a different apparence to the board and the sound card is visible in there. There are a few other issues related to this announced on the site in the past, but they dont seem to be resolved. Any idea how to get the user to acces the snd card module?

I hate to be this person (again) but the only solution when dealing with pulseaudio is "uninstall pulseaudio". I personally migrated to Google Hangouts.

...and personally, I'm still of a strong opinion, that most pulseaudio problems for a few years already are of local misconfiguration type.
Back in its early days (shortly after timer mode was introduced), pulseaudio had its fair share of maturing pains, but it's been awhile since.

I re-emerge system and world, deleted some changed configuration files for media setups and got a few things fixed. The rest seemed t get fixed after emerging pavucontrol which for example; brought up a new menu on skype and helped out adjusting things.

Right now i have the desktop almost all fixed but have not touched the netbooks yet. Today i got skype microphone to work and that concluded skype fixes.

A couple other issues are now with a few apps:

mplayer automatically shoots alsa PCM to max due to pulseaudio which causes a lot of static. I cant have alsa pcm or master at max because it causes static noise.

minitube does not have sound. Not sure why.

Minitube problem was related to phonon and mocp related to ffmpeg.
The rest of sound problems with pulse audio were resolved after emerging pavucontrol and rebuilding some broken packages.

Simultaneously some of these problems had broken packages that caused difficulties finding solution to fix sound problems.

Currently i all my systems use default pulseaudio configurations. The only change for the desktop at the moment is:
