Your current problem has nothing to do with kde/kdm. Your xdm-config says "xdm" for displaymanager. If you want to use kdm you have to replace the setting with "kdm".
Furthermore you have an own X-log at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" which you should look at, and there should also be a kdm.log - can't tell you where that can be found.

I fixed entry in: File: /etc/conf.d/xdm. to read "kdm"
I did not find any issues in: File: /var/log/Xorg.0.log
I am running: /etc/init.d/xdm start to start kde.

the login applet "kdm_greet" appears after a couple of minutes, I log in with username and password (not root) then
All that happens in the screen is the nvidia logo appears for a couple of seconds, then appears again no error messages on the screen.

I deleted /.initrc Now this is what the error looks like:
minig ~ # less /var/log/kdm.log
Code:

(i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it uses) go to the

file(s) it is logged. PAM logs messages related to authentication to authpriv.*.

I deleted this file earlier shich gave the error:
Code:

"KConfigIni: In file /.xinitrc, line 1: " Invalid entry (missing '=')

I have replace the file and added the line below:
Code:

minig ~ # cat /.xinitrc
exec ck-launch-session startkde

Now the error is gone, but still no success in starting kde. Please see errors below:
Code:

All the fixes that were suggested were needed and helped but the last thing i tried was looking for "startkde".
I noticed startkde was missing from the system. I don't know if I missed it or somehow it was removed.
I emerged kdebase-startkde.
I now have a beautiful "kdegreet" login screen followed by a beautiful kde fully operational desktop.
the logs are clear of any errors other than minor warnings.
YOU GUYS ARE TERRIFIC. ESPECIALLY: russK, VinzC, franzf and especially chithanh.
THANK YOU FOR ALL THE HELP DURING THIS MADNESS.
Code:
  # emerge kdebase-startkde

All fixed and happy now!!!!!!   "I Love Gentoo"
