I'm trying to migrate from fglrx to the open driver, I read the guide at http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/ati-migration-guide.xml

I removed ati-drivers with
Code:
emerge -C ati-drivers
, switched video driver to
Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="r600 radeon"
and did a world update.
I installed radeon-ucode which I believe is suitable for my Fusion APU,
Code:
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] BeaverCreek [Radeon HD 6550D] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
and loaded the files into the kernel

Code:
zgrep SUMO /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="radeon/SUMO_me.bin radeon/SUMO_pfp.bin radeon/SUMO_rlc.bin radeon/SUMO_uvd.bin"

xf86-video-ati is installed:
Code:
# emerge -qvp xf86-video-ati
[ebuild   R   ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-7.3.0  USE="glamor udev"

and opengl implementation only lists X
Code:
# eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1]   xorg-x11 *

and
Code:
# zgrep DRM_RAD /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y
# CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_UMS is not set

I removed xorg.conf:
Code:
$ ls /etc/X11/
Sessions  chooser.sh  startDM.sh  xinit

After this I rebooted, and saw something about fglrx tainting the kernel, so I found fglrx.ko in /lib/modules, removed it, and restarted the machine again.

Now, whenever I start X, for testing purposes with just "startx", all graphical output just goes away, like I pulled the cable from the video card.

I can ssh in, but find nothing that appears like a useful error message. I re-emerged mesa, xf86-video-ati, xorg-server and xorg-drivers just to be sure they weren't broken.

Running startx (as root to ensure it's not a permissions issue)

Code:
# startx
xauth: file /root/.serverauth.14145 does not exist

What was your motive for removing xorg.conf? My suspicion is that replacing, and accurately repopulating this file, might help to get you back on track.

My strong suspicion is that you're wrong.

..on the other hand, there's nothing obviously wrong in the log...

That 'guide' is a bit incomplete - it forgets about the need to disable most _FB_ kernel options (like radeonfb, vesafb, fortunately not efifb).

Let's eliminate an option: is radeon *kernel* module loaded by the time you start xserver ?
If not, try to modeprobe it - if that works, your console screen will turn hires from 80x24 (or whatever that default was).

That's what I've done before when using the FOSS drivers. X has been really good for a few versions picking the right options and in my experience having an xorg.conf file these days generally only gives one a chance to screw things up. I believe this is what VoidMage also refers to.

Radeon driver built in:

Code:

# zgrep RADEON /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y
# CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_UMS is not set
# CONFIG_FB_RADEON is not set
# lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by
kvm_amd                45943  0
# modprobe radeon
# modprobe radeon_incorrect
modprobe: FATAL: Module radeon_incorrect not found.

I tried moving back to earlier kernel versions, starting as far back as I simply could, with 3.4. I now have everything working just fine on 3.4, 3.10, and 3.12.
I'm looking at the diff between 3.12 and 3.14, but I can't immediately see anything that looks wrong. There's one mention of FB, DRM_KMS_FB_HELPER=y, which looks suspicious based on your advice that most of FB needs to be disabled, but the help text suggests it's a safe option to have.

I'll try to "oldconfig" the 3.12 config on 3.14 to see if that helps.

Letharion,

What are you expecting startx to do?
By default, it tries to start twm, xclock and three xterms.
Also by default, you don't have those packages installed, so Xorg gives you a blank screen.

It all looks good to me.

Code:
emerge -1 twm xclock xterm
will do for testing.

You need to create a ~/.xinitrc to tell Xorg what to do if you don't like the default.
No xorg.conf is fine to get you going and to use if you can live with a USA key-map.

Sorry for not being more precise. I use startx as the basic most test that graphics is working at all. Using kernels 3.4, 3.10 and 3.12, startx gives me just the output you say, twm, xclock and three xterms. From there I killall X to escape and then start KDM instead.

However, with 3.14, it's not just that I get a "blank screen", all graphics output is completely lost, the screen reacts similarly to how it would if I pulled the cable out, and I find no way to recover from this state other than rebooting.

This is interesting.
I took the working config from 3.12, used make oldconfig to upgrade it to 3.14, going with all defaults. Didn't work. Now I took the 3.14 one, and upgraded it to 3.15-rc8, which works fine.

If it works, I might just stick with 15, and even if it doesn't I suppose the problem appears to work itself out with a newer version. Perhaps its just a bug in 14?
