Hi, I know I've been hitting the forums pretty hard lately, but I do have a few problems. I know I must have missed something at some point, but when I boot my machine now, my services (network, printing, and xdm) do not start automatically anymore. they used to start with init.d, but that's all changed now and I'm not sure how to fix it, this is what I do when I boot: login to my root account, then I enter the following:
Code:
dhcpcd eth1

that causes my networking to start, then I input "xdm" and my display manager starts up, and I am able to login to my desktop environment. other services have to be started manually too, such as printing, ssh, etc. But I'm not sure what I did to start them, something similar to dhcpcd. I do apologize for putting this off so long, but it's been like this for a while. The thing about Gentoo, though, it doesn't need to reboot a lot, so it's easily forgotten about. I appreciate any help I can get on this.

Thanks!!

Todd

Well, rc-update is an old, [should-be] well-known Gentoo command, as far as I can remember. Now as for network, Gentoo's way differs a little bit as the main method is to launch a net script under init.d/ for each network interface, including lo . Roy Marple's dhcpcd may advantageously replace that. You might want to check the guide I wrote about that a while ago.

Okay, I really hate to bump this thread, but adding dhcpcd to boot did not work. I noticed that this problem started right after the move to systemd. I was certain that I took the necessary steps at the time, but I must have been mistaken. Of course, I may be wrong in thinking that this issue is related to the systemd migration, I'm really sort of lost now.

Thanks!!!

Todd

I think that systemd is completely different from OpenRC and that stuff like "rc-update" won't have any effect.
I did not dare changing to systemd
You might more successful in creating a new thread specifically mentioning systemd in the title.

p.s.:
btw, what would be the advantages of systemd over OpenRC?

Well, IMHO, having both OpenRC and systemd operating is seeking for troubles. I decided for as long as Gentoo's OpenRC is there and is the default way, I'd avoid systemd. I know it doesn't solve your issue. Only my 2¢.
