Just installed KDE and this is the content of my .xinitrc file:

Code:

#exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch mate-session
exec startkde

When I run startkde all I see is this http://oi57.tinypic.com/1ifwpl.jpg

Windows are not displayed or only parts of window are displayed like 2 of the borders and displayed in a strange way.

Which meta packages did you use to install KDE?

Teegrins, tux2015!

I've seen something similar happen on older (non-Gentoo) testing (Linux Mint) machines while using kernel modesetting (nouveau).

For a quick test, one could add

Code:
nomodeset

to the kernel command-line, and see if it's happening then, too.

If you're not using KMS, then this of course isn't the right direction at all, and if you do, it's still a long-shot since I've only seen it happen on a non-Gentoo installation (I've never (yet) ran Gentoo on the specific hardware to test).

I might also suggest posting your Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf if using any.

I indeed use nouveau. After adding nomodeset to kernel command line X stopped working at all (no screens found). I was able to fix KDE by adding "-opengl gles2" to USE flags and re-emerging kde-base/kwin. After this KDE started to work. I did not find KMS settings for nouveau in kernel menuconfig.

Anyway I will continue to use mate. I don't like what I see in KDE, the colours are crazy and make my eyes bleed, the interface is overcomplicated. The colour schemes are horrible. Have no idea how it can be used. However, I will definitely use kate and may be some other apps from KDE. pluma is very poor editor compared to kate.

Ah, interesting. I did suspect it was not likely to be the same thing I was seeing, but perhaps it was worth a shot!

Also good to know for my future testing. Thanks!

A quick comment with regards to KDE: I'm not too sure if I will be using it for a long while still, but it is what I have been using mainly since 2010. I never was too big of a fan with the default looks myself, but it is quite customisable. It took me a while to figure that out, but once I did, I got it into a shape I've had it for nearly 4 years.

I do believe it should be possible for you to get it look just right for you, too, at least on what comes down to them colours!

Sure I will do more research when I have more free time. I also plan to give a try to tiling DEs like awesome. Right now the most comfortable DE for me is mate as I used this interface since the times of gnome 2.
